It stimulates the nervous system and your natural test production. It also helps to release slight amounts of GH. The same sometimes goes with correctly done deadlifts.

2Thick is right.
A lot of people dont understand it and stick with the leg extention, concentration curls, and any isolated shit that wont make them any bigger.

Good point 2thick, I just wanted to add, that in either power movement, squat or deadlift, although you may not be isolating specific upper body muscle groups you are infact flexing and straining nearly every muscle in the body when performing these lifts correctly.

Nice response 2thick. I just want to add that when you put on muscle, your body will not allow one muscle to get too big and out of proportion with the rest of the body. That is why you see guys that are "Tank Top bodybuilders" who only train their upper body not ever getting any bigger than they already are. It would also make sense that when you want to put on size, to train the biggest muscle of the body.

Squats also make the metabolism more efficient.

As 2Thick said. Squats are the single most effective excercise for putting on mass all over your body and not just on your legs. Not only do your muscles stimulate legs but also stabilising muscles (which in the squat is a lot of other muscles) but also it is the best excercise to use to increases natural test production.

George made the point I was gonna bring up, about body proportion you can't weigh 160lbs and have 20 inch arms for instance. The whole body must grow and stay within a certain proportion.

You also must consider the enormous amount of blood volumne that is moved when you really pound the legs hard.....this stress on the body also causes growth...and puking....heh heh heh

Damn, I never realized this.. I've always done squats but I have to admit, some weeks I do them half-assed. =( From now on, its nothing but heavy, ass to the floor, puking my guts out, squats for Spunky. Now that I think about it.. it makes alot of sense.. Theres plenty of guys in my gym that only work upper body and thats it..... and once they get to a certain size they seem to stop growing. Their arms have been the same size for a long ass time...... I guess because they work them 3 days a week.

The uniformity thing is a very good point. The body was set up(geneticly) to posses a certain shape. It doesn't want to look like a freak. Squats also active a large quantity of stabalizer muscles in the upper body. Mid section especialy.
