Try after at about one gram of protein for every kg of bodyweight you hold. This will help your muscle to recover much faster. Before hand try a carb drink that contains a blend of simple and complex carbs to help keep energy levels stable. Just my opinion though ------------------ | ||

OK...You sound like a complete moron. You should be consuming ample protein with all your meals spread through out the day. Eating every 2-3 hours should already be habitual. Therefore you should be injesting protein every 2-3 hours. This includes pre and post workout meals. Protein is the most fundamental macro-nutrient in a bodybuilders diet so yes it matters that you are comsuming enough and it matters when you consume it. Post work out your body is in a catabolic state. The muscle are starving for nutrients so they can repair and then proceed to grow. Protein post workout will transition the muscles into an anabolic state. It will imediately help them heal and grow. The protein you eat throughout the day will be the building blocks of your new muscle mass. I TRY TO EAT ABOUT 45GRAMS OF PROTEIN PER MEAL AT LEAST ALL THROUGH THE DAY. AS FOR PROTEIN SHAKES I TAKE 1 SCOOP OF VP-2 IN THE MORNING WHEN I GET UP, I TAKE 1 PACK OF MYOPLEX FOR LUNCH, I TAKE 1 SCOOP OF N-LARGE 2 RIGHT AFTER A WORKOUT AND 1-2 SCOOPS OF VP-2 RIGHT BEFORE I GO TO BED. You need to avoid simple carbs before your workout. You don't want to screw up your blood sugar levels or you won't have the energy to complete it. Sugars within say fifteeen minutes before a workout is another story. After the workout, you need to consume a lot of simple sugars. You need to replenish your glycogen stores asap. If possible, I wouldn't take any protein with the carbs unless it was liquid amino acids or something. The protein will hinder the cab uptake. Also, don't take any complex carbohydrates till about 45 minutes after a workout. You have a 45 minute window after a workout while your muscle cells are experiencing intracellular thirst. You need to consume adequate protein during this time to ensure anabolism. But I would wait until after your body has had time to absorb the sugars. After I workout, I take in about fifty grams of sugar, wait ten or fifteen minutes, then take a protein drink. An hour or so later, I eat a meal. ...not to discredit anything anyone else said... Make sure that you injest a lot of protein before you go to bed. Perferably along with caseinate. -Stew | ||

Charles Poliquin pretty much says in the morning to try and eat something solid instead of a shake. He says performance will probably be better. As for the protein, don't forget that different type of wheys have different absoption rates. Pure Whey Isolate takes about 45min to digest in the system so it would be ideal to take an hour before you work out. Casien takes about 3 hours for it to digest, and concentrate is a little quicker, 2 hours. Stay away from the carbs before your workout except if you want to take them 5 min before you train. It does not have a negative effect on insulin levels if taken so soon to workout, but when take 10-60min before workout, it will drain you of energy due to the lowering of insulin levels. Right after I train I consume 100g of carbs immediatly after and then wait 10min or so and take in roughly 60g of protein with an Isolate/casien mix. The isolate gets in quicky and the casien digests slower. 1 hour later I make sure to eat a solid meal with at least 40g of protein in it. Night time take a Whey Casein drink and take some flax oil to slow the absoption of it. Remember, fat slows digestion up. This will help your body to fight catabolism during the night. | ||

within 1 hour of lifting is the MOST critical. Do this for a month,make no other changes and watch yourself grow. Try to eat two high protein meals within that hour if you can. ------------------ | ||
