you know the ends of an olympic bar....

olympic-bars.jpg

ok....here;s a pic, i'll link it in as well....the bar im talking about is on the left, with a normal bar for comparison on the right

as for spinning, when the bolt is tightened fully it will not spin (bad)......if left a little loose it will spin and feels a little more solid

the other option i have is to get a smaller washer which fits inside the bar end, and try and tighten it with a socket wrench (assuming it fits inside the whole)

Casavant, you and C3Bodybuilding are probably the only people I respect enormously here.

LMAO
Best post ever.

Ok I understand now. First of all I think you mean your jury-rigged bar is on the right and the normal one is on the left.

Second of all the bar is bowed. You can clearly see that in the pic.

Third of all I wouldn't worry about it not spinning unless you are doing power cleans and shit like that. I personally don't need the bar ends to spin for squats and bench.

Fourth, do the bar ends have the same width of lip on the end? If so I think that is OK from the washer standpoint. SO the weak point is the bolt itself. Did you get a grade eight bolt? How long/thick is it? How far does it thread into the bar?

For that stuff you are going to have to go on instinct and feel. I don't know what kind of poundages you do. Also you are holding the parts in your hand. You have a feel for how strong the shit is and how the bar feels on your hands.

To tell you the truth the fact that the bar is bowed is of concern to me. It has obviously been used with very heavy weights, and/or it is a cheap bar.

I would think about getting a third washer that is smaller than 2" but still overlaps the lip of the bar end for extra protection from the bolt getting ripped through the washers.

I dunno bro, it's gonna have to be your call. I would hate to say it's fine and have something happen. But I think I raised some legitimate concerns.

Let us know what you do.

yeah my bad, the bar on the right is the one im chatting about

it is bowed....i have a 3rd brand new hi-quality bar coming, but this is one i thought i could knock together incase others wanted to use a bar while im using the good bar

its not a 7ftbar (probably 6ft), so i guess its not a true olympic bar either, and im guessing that its therefore a cheap bar

the bolt is the weakpoint as the washer is the same width as the lip of the bar end.....i asked the storeman for a hi-end steel bolt but i didnt check what grade of steel it was...i also dont know how deep the thread is, but the bolt goes a fair distance into it and has a lot of resistance when turning it tight. still im not sure....

so i think after what u said ur concerns are good ones....i certainly wont be using it myself and i dont think i can let others use it either. i think i'll leave it to others to use [the people using it are likely to be doing very light weights (40-60kg) on deads and thats pretty much it], or just dont use it and use the two good olympic bars

thanks :)

The bar is crap IMO, dont even bother with it. As far as the quote above I have to disagree. A bar has to spin in the collars regardless of excercise. Heavy squats are much more difficult without the spinning collars. You dont want the plates turning during the lift and spinning collars minimize plate spin.

Well since you have 2 high quality ones....maybe just keep it around for light warmups or just bar weight stuff.

You could use it for side bends and twists and other weird exercises or just have it as an emergency spare.

OR for your girl to do 55# BPs with and stuff.

Also with that bar, the O.D. of the end is probably significantly less than 2", so the plates themselves will spin pretty freely on the bar.

AnabolicMD you're obviously a snob that likes to show off your wealth ($1400 olympic bars, Cuban cigars, etc.) so fuck off rich boy. j/k

Haha, I am a snob who likes to show off but Im hardly rich. Ive never had more than $3000 in the bank and Ive never made more than 34 000 a year. I've never spent more than 20 000 on a car or more than 100 000 on a house. Hold on, am I actually bragging about my brokedness? I think I am!

Do you like apples?

Wow I'm richer than you!

I have 10k in the bank

a $280,000 bouse

and a $700 car!

Well how do you like THEM apples show-off boy!

(OK you got me beat on the car bro!) LOL!

I'm actually contemplating an upgrade in the car department. I'm gonna splurge and spend 2-3k on the next one. :P

Seriously. My mom gave me my first two cars. The next one I bought for $200. I was a mechanic. The one after that I bought for $100 but I put like 4 gs into it (stupid). Now I got the $700 one.

I hear ya, but a car is prolly the best thing to be cheap about anyway. My car right now is a '91 accord with about 125 000 miles, it runs great and Im the original owner. I bought the car after high school, for college thinking Id get rich fast as soon as I graduated. Anyway its worth about 2 grand right now, I sold my $19600 vw when I bought my house. I have always been sure that Id be rich and successful by now but damnit, its not going how I planned it. Although I do see my income hitting the fifties and sixties in the next three years and with all my acquired thriftyness Ill make that 60 feel like 100.

Yes, I like apples why?
