These are the big stories from the WPO:
1. Amy Weisberger is the only female in the event, the only female qualified by her total to compete with the men at 132 - amazing!
2. The battle of the 165s: Wade Hooper and Tony Conyers really went at it here. First Wade aquatted a WR 749.5 and then Conyers (who was also celebrating his 44th birthday) put on the record breaker plates do to a massive 750! Wade then went on to bench a WR 496 and even took a shot at 518, but didnt have it in him. Super lifting also from Jarmo Laine of Finland and Angelo Berardinelli! Incredible class!
3. In the 198s, Jeese Kellum did a HUGE 850.75 WR squat and I believe hit a 597.2 WR bench, it got 2 reds at first but was then given to Jesse.
4. In the 220s the benching of Ken Patterson and the squatting of Harald Selsam was incredible. Ken hit a WR 622 and took a shot at 675! Harald hit a huge 848 squat and almost got an 881!
5. The squatting in the Heavyweight divisions was the BIG deal of the night. What an incredible series of squats with Ano Turtiainen first hitting a 1005.2 WR only to have it taken by Goggins who buried a 1036! But next up was the mighty Coan who threw on the record breaker plates to bring it to a mind-blowing 1038! His right shoulder/trap area where he holds the bar was bleeding pretty good, he says it never heals. What a series of squats! Garry Frank missed his opening 903 squat but then got it on 2 but then missed 953. This had him starting off at 100 pounds under his best meet squat.
6. Lastly, BOTH Garry Frank and Steve Goggins were unable to get their opening benches on two attempts and both were out of the meet. The crowd sat in stunned silence. What this meant for Steve was that his 1036 would not count at all and the record in the 275s would go back to Ano's 1005.2. Ano then went on to finish the night (at about 2:30 a.m.) with an EASY 821 pull and about 2 minutes later asked for a 4th at 881 but had run out of gas. What a puller!
Ed Coan was the BIG winner of the night and took home $12,000 for his efforts. $10,000 for the class win and $1,000 each for his squat and 242 total records. A Looooooooooooong night of lifting but well worth the wait!
