Would eating at maintenance calories work for Rippetoes?

Hey guys...so before I get to my question, I figure some history would be good.

I'm 19 now and up till the age of 16, I was pretty fat. then I decided to change that but like many people, I was uninformed and decided to starve myself to lose fat. So I ended up as a "fat skinny" kid...I still had fat but a lot of my muscle had disappeared.

Then university started and other than some inconsistent weight training, I haven't really payed much attention to my body.

Right now, I'm at 175 lbs, 5'10. That may not seem like much but the problem is that my strength resembles someone who weighs like 150 and I still have some fat on me (alot more than a 5'10 175 pound guy should have). So I decided that I should do Rippetoes program but he does not go much into diet. It does say that many athletes with fat may lean out on the program but thats usually for people who have just started out (or maybe not?).

So I thought that I should eat at maintenance level (using BMR/Harris Benedict formula) and eat a lot of solid clean protein (1 gram or more for every pound of bodyweight) and keep the rest of the diet clean with healthy fats and carbs like oats, brown rice, yams. Would this work or would I end up not gaining any muscle? I was also thinking of cardio twice a week. Thanks

That should work. Eat clean and do some cardio on your off days. You will more than likely lose fat and gain some lbm/strngth.
