Women Getting Bigger and Stronger

According to this article British (western) women are becoming more equal in size and strength to their male counterparts..

http://tlc.discovery.com/news/afp/20040830/women.html

I think through evolution women will eventually be the same size as men, considering they are healthier now and are just as active as men, in the past all women did was sit around the house and have 10 kids, which meant that they were always barefoot and pregnant, now and in the future they only have a few kids, so they will continue to become stronger..

I don't thin kwomen will ever be (naturally) as large as men or have the ability to get that way. Women smply don't have the testosterone to build that size. Unless through a few thousand more years of evolution, our hormone patterns change. Which could happen, I imagine. Now, as far as strength, I could see it. You don't have to be big to be strong.

I think the rise in size and strength seems exponential because women were starting from zero - as you mentioned. Eventually, it will level off and maintain.

Interesting though. :)

I can't find it now, but there was an article that passed by me on cnn.com or aol.com news about how women will be able to run the 100 m dash in a faster time than men in the yr 2156. They took the improvement in the best times for men over the years and women over the years. The improvement rate for women were faster than men and based on that, projecting forward at this derived rate, the women would overtake the men in 150 yrs. But I agree w/ Daisy, the data is skewed by the time period that women have been able to compete in competitoin that wasn't stifled by society.

Well thats a silly example, it assumes the rate of improvement will be a constant which is :p

but I do think that through evolution, the female will eventually be of equal in size to the male or she will become bigger; I just can't say when, not anytime soon..

For natural selection to allow that to happen men worldwide would have to consistently and exclusively breed with stonger women for several generations. No smaller, physically weaker women could have any children at all.

considering how immensely popular the teeny, weeny super skinny look is for women worldwide, I dont see that in the forecast for at least the next few generations.

According to that "study" (and I use that term very loosely), they are just saying that women are generally larger than they used to be.

Talk about science of the obviously apparant!

Of course women are getting larger! Better nutrition, better health care, etc.
Have you ever visited a home from the 1800's? They are tiny cause the people were SMALLER because a) nutrition sucked b)health care sucked c) on top of lousy nutrition they worked their fingers to the bone.

Guess what! According to this same pattern, MEN are getting bigger too! Did you know that the size of hockey players has grown so much since the early 1900's that they repeatedly have considered enlarging the ice size? Funny I didn't see reference to the gain in male body sizes mentioned in that article.

I can't believe our media some days! You'd think these people weren't allowed to report a story if thier IQ is above 80 or something...

Not really, that’s no the kind of evolution we’re talking about. You have to look at the reason why human males are bigger and stronger in the first place. There is nothing in biology that makes male species larger than female, more often it’s actually the females that dominate-female spiders eat their male counterparts, ants and bees are female dominated with a big female queen, female sea creatures are sometimes much larger than males. The reason human males evolved larger and stronger is due to the survival behavior patterns of the human and it’s predecessors. The human is a complex life-form so it takes the female 8-10 months of down-time before she can successfully birth a single new human. In tribal times the females were forced to constantly be pregnant because life for the humans was so dangerous with disease, starvation, infant-mortality, war, weather disasters, getting killed by wild-beasts, etc. The men would have to go out and hunt and gather while the women stay under tent and reproduce as much as they could-this was necessary if the tribe was to continue to exist. 8-10,000 years ago we had the dawn of civilization in a place called Summaria(Iraq) no more tribal struggle for survival but the men continued to do the heavy work and for females their life pretty much stayed the same-high birth rates, stay at home. It wasn’t until the 1960’s- that we saw the dawn of developed sedentary society. In this case the women are just as active as the men and now they only have 1or2 children if that, this is a radical change in human behavior. The UN estimates that eventually all the countries in the world will develop and have these low birth rates and for the first time in human history the population growth will stabilize.

and to add to that humans are eating more and there is much more estrogen in the food we’re eating-what effect that has is hard to determine but we’re already seeing young girls in the developed world hitting puberty faster-this is said to be due to the increased estrogen in the food supply.

So I think there will definitely be some effects on evolution but how long it will take is unknown. I don’t think the women will become more masculine or will produce more testosterone vs. estrogen (the woman’s ovaries produce estrogen and testosterone while the males testicals only produce testosterone which converts back to estrogen) so they won’t be big manly chicks they’ll just be bigger girlys.. I think??
