Windows XP...start up problem

When I log onto my computer, it takes forever to load my personal settings. I have no clue what is wrong. I am also using the google toolbar with opo blocker and it seems I am still getting hammered with them.

My IE also locks up continusly.

So far I've defrag'd....rand my spybot....and cleared all my cookies.

Any other ideas?

Sounds like you have a virus or at the very least spyware.

The pop-ups that you are getting are part of the messaging system and not IE if you are still getting pop-ups with the Google toolbar installed.

To check for viruses, go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and then what it can't fix, search on the site for the name and see how to manually fix it.

For spyware stuff, Housecall will find some of it, put otherwise, there are many anti-spyware programs that you can run.
PestPatrol is one that you can run the free version of and it won't remove the items, but you can at least have it tell you what you have and then do a search on how to remove it.

If your computer is running slowly, then right click on the taskbar and select the Task Manager.
Then go to the list of processes running (not the list of tasks, but the actual processes). Make sure that the box is checked to show all processes.
Then list it in order of CPU and memory usage - once you have done that for each of those, you will have a good idea of what is taking up the resources.

Damn, is this the same computer with the broken dvd drive?

I say beat the thing with a baseball bat repeatidly if so.

Why aren't you answering me on AIM?

Can I do a screen shot of my processes and you look at them and tell me what i may and may not need?

You might want to limit your startup programs. One of these programs could be this supposed virus you have.

Navigate to
Start>Run>"msconfig" and then click the "startup" tab

If you have a ton of boxes checked this could possibly be your problem. It will do well to research what each of these things is, but I dont think disabling them all wont cripple anything - the only one I keep checked is "UpdReg" which is what windows update uses. Your google toolbar will be listed and so will a bunch of other programs...

Make sure you are using the newest version of IE - the older versions have security issues.

I am not clear on what you are getting hammered with - popup ads? Try disabling windows messenging service (this is not msn
messenger). instructions here:Remove Windows Messenger

CWshredder is a supreme program and easy to run read about it here: http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html#cwshredder

download it here: http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip
*you may want to save the file and then open it from your computer as it will require you to close browser windows to run it.

That program will get rid of spyware that is extremely malicious.

If those dont work I would think Virus, get norton utilities or something.

Download a program called adware, it will detect and remove spyware from your system.

I also had a problem with long start up/log on and shut down/log off process. It wound up being some kind of registry key setting. Check out xptuneup.com

Hope that helps

adaware might have issues with what he is dealing with, especially if he already ran spybot search and destroy. - I use both those programs though and really like them. When neither of those two programs pulled through I used the Cwshredder and it took care of the issue.

as SoreArms stated, it may be a registry setting. But before you probably do anything you should create a system restore point, this will allow you to restore the comp back to before you changed settings.
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore

And from there its self explanatory
