Why you need to do Cardio...My .02

I've seen a lot of posts regarding cardio and I figured I'd weigh in with my thoughts. Here are 3 reasons to do cardio:

1) Burns tons of calories
2) Strengthens your heart
3) Improved cardiovascular conditioning is good for lifting

Please read on...

1) Cycling, running, and cross country skiing burn TONS of calories, more than any other exercise. There is no substitute. Operating at 60-75% max HR is the fat burning zone. However there are added benefits which I believe are key for people who have gained a lot of size quickly.

2) As overall muscle mass increases you need a cardiovascular system that can effectively deliver oxygen to the muscles. AAS accelerates muscle growth in a somewhat disproportionate manner-ie arms get bigger but heart stays the same size. Bigger muscles need more blood; its as simple as that. No drug (even EPO) can take the place of a well conditioned heart. If you never do cardio you have the you'll put tremendous stress on your heart as it hasn't been conditioned to deal with the added tissue it needs to support. A stronger bigger heart can pump more blood in a stroke. You don't need to be Lance Armstrong on the exercise bike, but if you've got the size you need the heart to pump the blood thru your big bod.

3) Lungs bring oxygen into the blood. Heart pumps blood to muscles and...."contracting muscles obtain Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) from glucose stored in the blood stream and the breakdown of glycogen stored in the muscles. Initially pyruvic acid and small amounts of ATP are generated from the breakdown of glucose. The pyruvic acid mixed with oxygen is converted to carbon dioxide, water and ATP. When muscles contract vigorously for long periods the circulatory system begins to lose ground in delivery of oxygen. In these conditions most of the pyruvic acid produced in the breakdown of glucose is converted to lactic acid (LA). As the lactate is produced in the muscles it leaks out into the blood and is carried around the body. If this condition continues the functioning of the body will become impaired and the muscles will fatigue very quickly. When oxygen becomes available the lactic acid is converted to pyruvic acid and then into carbon dioxide, water and ATP." By conditioning your cardiovascular system thru cardio you are creating a more efficent energy transport system and ultimately improving your ability to lift more longer. Yes, lifting is an anaerobic exercise. But improved cardiovascular condition will allow you to proceess oxygen more efficiently thereby allowing you to do more work ie lifting. If a minimal amount of cardio will improve your conditioning and allow for better performance in the gym it seems worth it.

I'd say you could really benefit from minimum :30 a day 4 days a week. I'd say shoot for :45 to an hour at least once a week. Hell 4-5 one hour sessions won't kill you and would burn tons of fat. That much cardio wouldn't lead to much if any muscle catabolism. I would say anything more than an hour will begin to work against mass gains. Throw in some intervals to mix up the intensity. The increased energy demands will burn more calories. The hill program on a good stairmaster or bike will do plenty good. Hell some of those workouts are harder than my tri-bike workouts. Recover from a cardio workout with more carbs than a weight session, but also include lots of protein to curb any catabolitic effect. The stairmaster or running on the treadmill or riding a bike outside or inside would be fine for the joints-all pretty low impact. Trail or road running might be too much for the joints.

So thats my opinion. Cardio does more than burn fat. You don't want to have a Formula 1 car with a AMC Gremlin engine do ya?!?

IMO this is a very good post. Cardio is very important and some people don't realize it. I think people should do even a little cardio on or off cycle even if bulking

Great post and a topic that gets neglected here to much! I bet only 25% of the guys here do cardio consistently.

I've been a great believer in doing cardio as well as weights since I did a bit of research on it because my BF was 20% but that is still an excellent post - simple, rational and to the point so in the hope that it converts some anti-cardio bros - BUMP!!!

great post for here. us girls know this stuff already. however sometimes that's all we do. must lift heavy weights!

That's another advantage of being a bro you lift a heavy weight every time you go for a leak ........ or is that just me heheheheh.
:fro:

I completely agree.

Who wants to gain a lot of weight but have your overall athleticism decline? I want to be able to play football or other sports without running out of gas in the first series.

I think whether you do cardio or not depends on your goals if want to cut up, then great do it, BUT YOU WILL LOSE SIZE AND STRENGTH unless you are on a good amount of AS. but if you are bulking and want to gain as much mass as possible IMO don't even think about it.

if you want to stay small then do your cardio. if you are endomorph ok but you will never become a monster if you are doing cardio 4 times a week with normal genetics. For a fitness lifestyle it is ok but not for a real bodybuilder

I'm with the last two guys here. If you're pushing the limits of your size potential then I wouldn't even as much as look at a treadmill. I used to be a cardio freak. Loved it. Then I had the relization that I want to be a freak of nature. I stopped doing cardio and what do you know...The freakiness began. Strength sky rocketed as did muscle mass. For overall health purposes it's a good idea to incorperate cardiovascular training. But for the serious bodybuilder in the preliminary stages of putting on all the muscle mass he can cardio should be avoided in my opinion. We all know bodybuilding isn't about health. It's about being the one to carry the first place trophy home after the show. A lean physique is great, but it means nothing wihtout super-human amounts of muscle mass which I just don't see happening with hours of cardio.

I agree I dont think cardio 4 to 5 times a week at 45 minutes a wack is gonna eat up that much muscle. I dont wanna be 40 years old and have to take the elevator up to the 3rd floor of a hotel just to keep from breathing real hard and I have a few buddies now that look like they are in good shape but if they had to jump in a lake to swim 40 yards to save there little girl from drowning they would be up shit creek, personally Im not into the freak look I lean more towards the mens health look and being in shape and fealing good. I am in shitty shape right now because I had surgery on my neck 5 months ago and I can tell big time how out of shape I am, I catch myself breathing hard doing little shit and that sucks. trying to get back in shape now and cant wait, anyway not knocking the guys that are huge on here because I know you guys work your balls off just throwing in my 2 cents I think doing light running even just 30 minutes a day 4 days a week makes a big difference in the way a guy feals and looks, 1PUNCH

I have to agree with 1Punch that doing 20 mins of cardio at 50% - 80% MHR first thing in the morning would not make any serious inroads into your mass unless as was pointed out you want to get freaky in which case you would be too big to do cardio anyway.
But for all non-competitive BB's the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages for the reasons outlined and IMHO the reason it is neglected is not because BB's are afraid of losing size, cos personally I would more than happy with a physique like Ben Johnson's or maybe only slightly bigger, but because dare I say it they can't be bothered. I know BB's who have the same goals as me in that they don't want to be absolutely huge and although they are highly dedicated trainers they absolutely dread the thoughts of doing cardio!
;)

still doing 4-5 hours a week on the stairmaster is not for laughs

i do max 2 hours a week on the stairmaster. But if done more, bye bye size.

Could'nt agree more - cardio is the cornerstone for practically ANY sport! Without a strong engine you can forget about achieving your max potential.

Even the great Dorian Yates did cardio 20-30min three times a week whilst bulking!

20-30min. of cardio i doubt will affect you that much (in the negative aspect of losing muscle or strength). I'd have to agree that benefits far outweigh the suppossed consequences.

cardio is great

i hate listening to some people whine about how there gonna burn away all their muscle. There a big difference in running 30-40 mins 3-4 times per week and running a damn marathon. My last cycle i didnt do cardio for 10 full weeks. FELT SO FAT, cardio hardens me up so well and gets rid of all my water.
