Weight training– these words conjure up images of hugely muscled body builders, big dumbbells and barbells, the macho thing to do. A complete male domain.
What would you say if I told you that weight training is highly recommended for all age groups and both the sexes?
Osteoporosis (Loss of Bone Density) is a very prevalent problem amongst women over the age of 30 years. Loss of density can be prevented through weight bearing activities such as Weight Training.
Weight Training is by far the best tool to use against Fat. Contrary to popular belief aerobic exercise is not even half as effective in fat loss as weight training. This is because weight training causes the body to burn calories at an accelerated rate all through out the day, where as aerobic workouts only concentrate on calorie burning during that hour of exercise and has no effect on the body’s ability to burn calories at rest.
Weight Training is the only activity that promotes an increase in Lean Tissue in the body. Once lean tissue increases, the body has no other choice but to increase its caloric expenditure to maintain the added muscle.
Women are never going to get muscular and big through weight training as their hormonal make up has an abundance of Estrogen and has Testosterone in miniscule quantities. Testosterone is responsible for Muscular growth and estrogen actually promotes fat build up. Hence women generally carry less muscle and more fat than their male counterparts. LESS MUSCLE OR lean tissue also means a sluggish metabolic rate.
So if women want a lean toned body, they must do everything in their power to promote muscular growth, to bump up their metabolism. The growth of lean tissue will be miniscule, but this minute increase in muscle will give a big boost to the amount of calories the woman will burn at rest, giving her a lean toned appearance.
Lets just say that even if a woman wanted to get as muscular as a man, it would not be possible.
The 2 basic indicators of aging are muscle loss and loss of bone density.
Both these can be reversed through weight training. Thus weight training has proven itself to be the miraculous anti aging pill that man has been looking for. No other form of exercise can reverse the aging process more than WEIGHT TRAINING. Finally the major difference between a 60 yr old man and a 30 year old is the amount of muscle they carry. In other words a 60 year old can look like a 30 year old if he stops the inevitable loss of muscle through judicious use of weight training.
Weight Training is also ideal for kids. It improves focus makes them stronger and more agile and helps them get more coordinated in their movements. If a kid is showing signs of obesity then it’s crucial for the child to get onto a weight-training schedule to reverse the trend at an early age.
The biggest myth surrounding Weight Training is that it stunts growth. Height is a genetically determined trait. No exercise form can either promote or stunt growth in the bones. The bones will continue to elongate as long as the Epyphisial plates at the ends of the bone do not fuse. Epyphisial closure cannot occur due to weight bearing activity.
The only reason you see most people who lift heavy weights are short is that short people excel in weight training due to a lower center of gravity.
I
n other words a person is short not because he lifts heavy weight, but is capable of lifting really heavy because he is short.
To site an example, just because all Jockeys are short, it doesn’t mean that Horse riding stunts growth.
To sum it up, whether you are a man or a woman, a senior citizen or a junior, if you want to get fitter, stronger, leaner, younger you cannot afford to give WEIGHT TRAINING a miss.
