Each and every day I meet people in public settings, when I work I meet more. And each and every day I feel that many of the people I meet are completely braindead.... I think it is our culture that is the culprit. We have fast foods, junk foods, each of which after eating provides a nice serotonin numbness and basically fills the body with sludge...than there is televison, the other primary culprit, which is not only the absence of exercise for the brain, but the antonym of it, making it even worse than the equivalent of sitting around all the time for your body. Then there is the MTV pop culture, which basically completely instructs young people how to behave, which is primarily where you get wiggas, n'syncs, and all the rest. My generation is particularly bad. I see kids every day, and most of them have that heavy surfer/potheadish drawl and can't even grasp simple concepts.... '

It's really as if most everyone is under the influence of a light narcotic, and that narcotic is our culture; food, TV, lifestyle.

whats worse is i dont even have to meet people to know thier stupid. everyday when im driving i see stupid people. i judge people by thier driving habits, if they cant drive they are stupid.

liberalisation of the media but with no responsibilty

i.e. back in the days ultra-conservative values (i.e. dont have sex, dont dress up like a hooker when ur 13, respect your elders) worked in the majority of cases. it was by no means perfect, but any violence/teen pregnanies were on a much lower scale, not to mention any of those to be in that category were so heavily stigmatised an example was set.

nowadays peer pressure has pushed a 'norm' upon youngsters. 13 yr olds are putting lipstick on, wearig miniskirts, having sex unprotected, its being vomited upon them everyday by the media, mary kate and ashley are a good example, all these stupid teen mags, xcelebrities who these people look up to being knocked up by some 'musician' aka drug dealer, the guys see ghetto culture and rebel trying to emulate it and nothing is there to either try and teach them behaving like that is wrong, and consequently they carry that behaviour to adulthood and become the twits i see on my street corner

i think both scenario;s are wrong. the right think would be liberalisation of the media with some kind of responsibilty. instead of making thongs for under 18s andheavily marketing it, it might be nice for manufacturers to say 'hmmm, maybe we are agressivly marketing'. shit clothes manufacturers actually sponsor skate gangs etc nowadays to wear their clothes....to apply that responsibilty to the media too. all i see on TV is sex, drugs violence etc. it might be hard hitting and that TV is good but there is an appropritate time for that, and i think parents have grown to be irresponsible in letting heir kids stay up to watch it

io also think kids aren;t punished enough. detention....please. most kids dont give a shit. childrens prisons.....somewhere they can have a TV and playstation in their rroom. u wanna punish them, stick em oput on a farm and work them hard, or even in the city. they graffiti something, they clean graffiti for 2 weeks solid. they should break these fuckers down like they did in national service in the army ages ago. it will be the best rehab these guys ever had , i guarantee they will never do it again.

once hey are adults and can ACTUALLY comprehend rehabilitation u can be a bit more liberal and teach them compurter skills.trade skills in prison. as a youngster they are seeking boundaries and punishment. all i know is our society never seems to strike thatcrucial balance between libralism and conservatism IMHO

We have become SOFT, not Stupid
Soft looks like stupid in its actions

We Americans are very smart in inventing new and better ways to get even softer.

Yet you looooove Vin (a TOTAL made-for-the-MTV'ers actor), and want a buff bod.
You really arent that much different. Just cuz you eat healthy dosent make you some rebelious anti-establishment ground breaker.

Listen abraham, I have a buff bod already, and vin is my avatar because I enjoyed his movie pitch black, and we are vaugely similiar, though not in the face, but more in his attitude in pitch black...hard to explain.

Second, I never said I was anything, I was making an observation about most people I meet.

Try giving up television completely for 2-4 months and note how much clearer your brain feels....

Life in the US is too fucking easy --- it turns people into softdicks and fatcracks. We have no need for opium --- our society is our escape and our vice.

You implied it, and you know it.

I agree religion is no longer the opiate of the masses, TV is. However, I fail to see how you are not as much a part of the "MTV pop culture" as much as some fat kid.

I could be wrong, cuz I dont memorize all your posts... but dont you wear 'cool' clothes, want a 'coo'l Vin Diesel/fast n' furious car, want some hot blonde with fake titties, want a million bux? The only dif between you and the fatty is your diet.

You're basing your opinion of someone on an implication?

When did wanting a lot of money make you a part of pop culture?

When did wanting the good things in life make you an MTV addict? I guess that means every CEO who grosses a "million bux" or more is an MTV automaton??

BTW, your usage of the colloquialism "bux" just put you into the MTV pop culture.

You serioulsy trying to tell me that its not totally obvious from his post that he considers himself NOT to be one of those that he is ranting about?

My point about the money/car/tits thing is that really, we are all about 95% similar, but people make a huge deal about the miniscule 5% that they are 'different'. And yes, I consider myself part of pop culture, and part of the rampant consumerism we have today. Not as much as others, but I'm still in there. I prefer Slayer to N'sync, and Mountain Biking to Football, but thats just part of my 5% difference.

I think he's a 20 year old kid trying to define himself. I think he's a stand-up dude who is still developing his position in society.

I'd bet you dimes to dollars that you were the same way at 20 (or will be that way when you hit 20).

I think he's right, MTV has an uncanny, negative affect on today's youth, the fact that he thinks it's a problem puts him in the 5% by default.

I tend not to watch TV - movies yes, but not so much TV. I'd rather program or read. I'm with Frackal on this, I look around and I see these people and I find it amusing.

Think of it in terms of all the animals in the world. The whole basis of life on Earth is the struggle for survival. Lions only eat what they can run down and catch in the hunt. Humans in well developed nations don't need to do that, they have supermarkets - they trade denominations of a monetary system in order to get the food. It has been shown that apes will build tools to improve their ability to get more food (not power tools obviously, but employing sticks and such to increase the rate at which they can get food). Humans break into different groups and one of those groups will then get that food using elaborate tools, which they purchase with the money. That thought process evetually leads to disease - if an elephant is born with a malform leg, or if its brain is essetially dumber than the rest of its herd, or if its body uses too much water too quickly - then it will die. Either directly from the problem at hand, or it will be too slow when times of necessity arise and it will get caught and eaten. Humans have invented medicine - so diseases and genetic mistakes are remaining and then working their way back into the gene pool.

All of that combined leads to a consumer based society where people no longer have a threat against them, and instead have idle time where they need to pass it. It leads to depression, boredom, and missplaced aggression.

Watching people worrying about clothes, make up, and implants has to be as amusing to other cultures as it is for us to look at African tribes where they use rings to extend their necks or plates to expand their lips.

blah blah blah - I'm rambling.

anyway - Frackal - you are just describing the condition that is cultural evolution - the less work that needs to be done, the more idle time there is and there will be ways to fill it and a market exists where it consists solely of devices to occupy that time. is it good or bad? depends on how you look at it - but considering it has been in place for some time and it is the atmosphere that we live in - instead of fighting it, perhaps it would be better to look at the people around you, that walk about oblivious to the way they don't see the world and think to yourself how you can exploit them. I'm not saying kidnap them and use them as slave labor - not that kind of exploitation - but in the way that they are essentionally malleable minds walking around connected to money - and money is what society dictates that we need to move higher in the eyes of others... so mold them into something that gets you the money. find something that the mindless masses want, and the more universal it is, the more money you will make.

and my comment above about genetic mistakes getting propigated back into the gene pool is likely going to get misconstrued, but I assure you that I had no intention of proposing some Hitler-esque ideas.

Yeah, Im WELL over 20 (sucks for me). I have no beef, I just think its a little harsh to call all these people losers just because they dont workout, or eat right.

You missed my point on the 95% thing... its not that there are 5% of the population that are different, its that we are all the same except for 5% within each person.
Like... you and I are 95% the same, but there is a small 5% that makes us different. Generally we all want the same shit and are far more alike than different.

I did that, and you're right...it's amazing how much more clear my mind feels. Hell, I think my brain is cleaner since I gave up TV. I thought I'd miss it, but I don't even think about it anymore....

Now I get disgusted with people who sit in front of that damn box for 8 hours a day.

And I don't think kids today are particularly stupid. Remember, being a teenager is about conformity and fitting in -- we all tried to be part of a group when we were fifteen. MTV influenced social groups in 1983, and it's still doing it in 2003. The marketing has become slicker and the haircuts have changed but that's about it. :)

Everyone likes to view themselves as rebels. However, if they were to take a long, honest look at themselves they would see far more simularities, than differences.

We can find fault in those that we see in front of us, yet the person that we can't find fault in, is the one person we can't see.

Anybody who thinks that life in America is easy needs to get out more! Life in America is hard!

We work way harder, don't live as long, have the shittest vacation times of anybody in Western countries.

It's just cultural that's all. We have no respect for knowledge you can't make a buck out of.

Generally, primates form groups, and have 'cultures' of sorts. Higher primates take care of their sick too, its not just humans. Although they may not be the most 'fit' the unhealthy can still add value to a group (be it human or chimp). The correlation seems to be that the smarter the animal, the more it cares for the weaker members in its group.

I guess it makes sense on a board like this, but everything seems to come down to fat vs fit. If you are fat then you are a 'mindless drone', and if you are fit then you are a top human specimen both physically and intellectualy. However this board is exaclty like the "money is what society dictates that we need to move higher in the eyes of others" scenario you describe, however instead of money, its muscle. Is a muscle focus any better than a money focus?

Being fat means being weak minded, unmotivated, undisciplined and often times reckless with your own health.

A mindless drone? Probably not.

Does this mean everyone should be sexy and muscular? No. But everyone should maintain their body weight within a healthy standard.

Bullit said:

as with anything, I would assume it is probably all relative.

for George Spellwin, he makes money off of the muscle being the focus, so he would say both are important.
someone that can live off the land and doesn't need the money will need the muscles to survive.
thinking of the muscles is healthier in the long run probably - but taking it to the extreme that many on this board do perhaps then negates that.

all in all, I'd say I'd rather have lots of money than be stupid. :)

Bullit, it's not so much being a product of pop culture, the point I am trying to make here is that these things, excessive junkfood, excessive television, general laziness of mind and body, people today are as if they are constantly under the influence of a sedative, an opiate is a good description for it.....

Now to address your points briefly before I leave, I wear what I wish to wear, right now I am wearing adidas training pants, a sleevless t-shirt I bought at target, and boxer shorts. I drive a nissan altima that I like....of course I would take a nice car (for free) like the ones in F&TF, but I would sell it soon after. I do not watch any television at all and have not for almost 3 years, of course occasionally I have watched it in this period but not even once a week. I will elaborate further later on tonight.

If you think Americans are stupid here - you should spend some time outside the US. After being out for a while you can spot Americans a mile away: generally arrogant, incredibly ignorant, demanding, antagonistic, and annoying. It really is embarassing.

No... being fat COULD mean being weak minded, unmotivated, undisciplined and often times reckless with your own health, but not always. I am sure there are plenty of fat geniuses (sp?). Its a hierarchy of wants. Some want big macs more than a fit body. Or perhaps they are too busy making millions of BUX to spend time in a gym. Because they are undisciplined regarding their body does not mean that they aren't infinitely more disciplined with thier mind then 99% of this board.

Everyone "should" read lots of books too. Are those on EF that are huge, but dont read also "weak minded, unmotivated, undisciplined"?

My point is that huge pipes dosent necessarily put you above everyone else.

Plus... fat guys rule, less competition.

I swear, an ok looking american dude could come here and fuck a new chick every night (if he were so inclined). Up here a club could be packed with hotties, and nobody makes any moves (including me 90% of the time, but Im an ugly fuck).
When I was in Vegas there were realatively ugly dudes hitting on the hottest chicks all over the place. The american aggressivness could be put to good use up here.

I've been stumped on this one for a good while myself.I would rather think in different reasoning, and say that the government is
providing the public with a mild sedative in foods,drinks,medication,ect......a conspiracy of sorts. But i still very much support your theory frack.

2 words: CALGARY STAMPEDE

A solid 11 days of drinking and EVERYONE in the city goes out and its all focused on 3 or 4 huge, packed bars. This year was the best, unbelievable. I dont know where they are for the rest of the year, but OMFG were there ever a billion hotties walking around. I'm guessing its kind of like Mardi Gras but sadly without the boob shows.

Unfortunately this is true. Americans don't travel well.

I don't think Americans are really dumber. Tests of our schoolkids against OECD countries show them to be be mediocre, but not down at the very bottom. I think we are just ignorant.

agree - it isn't mental capacity or stupidity, it's arrogance and indifference.

Americans I've seen generally seem to think that because they wave around a few greenbacks everywhere they travel people should be lined up waiting to take their abuse -- doesn't work that way. the rest of the world doesn't necessarily subscribe to dollar-worship and American style function-over-form.

So true. I've given up TV except for news lately and I find my mind to be a lot clearer although I can't make an exact judgement since the ol' noggin is still a bit cluttered from woman troubles but overal cognitive skills, memory, and free thinking seems to be picking up considerably. I've slowed down on eating fast food and stick to good old fashioned home cooking (healthy at that) and my body feels more healthy. Now, if only I could get more sleep, i'd be running on all 8 cylinders.

Read, or surf EF?

The majority of American pop culture encourages the debasement of social morality by catering to the most primitive human urges - sloth, glutany, greed, lust, vanity.

Rich, fat motherfuckers getting liposuction to improve their sexual appeal.

Who knows.

People are getting dumber, just work at anywhere the you will have a lot of contact with many people.

I seriously think that 80-90%(at least here in Texas) of people are fuckin dumb shits.

You can't hold any kind of intellectual conversation what so ever.

One of the biggest problems underlying the cause for stupidity in this country is too much information. Our brains can't process everything we see, so of course our minds will get cluttered with shit. You take an average person from two centuries ago and place them next to an average person today, and see who is more physically/mentally competent. Our society is lazy in general because of more convienences, cocky and smart-assed because of peer pressure/media, and 'stupid' because there is too much of everything that doesn't serve a challenge for us. People have to at least keep the right mindset and not get sucked into the collective drone pool. Think for yourself instead of letting society always think for you.

Exactly TC2, I've worked with the public for 4 years and I have had the same experience with most of them.

I was/am (career change soon) a butcher for 10 years.
I don't care what anyone says, people ARE getting dumber and most definetely lazier.

I've seen people so dumb, that I could swear that they must be imbred.

Same slack-jawed expression, lazy as fuck, because of this I seriously have little to no respect for most people.

I don't know if it's a case of being dumber, but i think one thing that is sadly lacking in people these days is common sense. Very few people seem to apply common sense to anything they do. To me, common sense simply dictates that you think something over or plan before doing something. Failure to apply a little common sense then renders a person as looking stupid when things goes astray.

We don't use our thought processes anywhere near as much as we should because we rely on computers and machines of all descriptions to make our decisions for us, therefore it weakens the ability of our mind to think and it becomes lazy.

I used to watch very little tv before, but ever since the first "reality" shows starting popping up, I have completely stopped watching tv.

We work way harder, don't live as long, have the shittest vacation times of anybody in Western countries.

It's just cultural that's all. We have no respect for knowledge you can't make a buck out of.

de puta madre!

Have you read Confessions of an Unlikely Bodybuilder? You just used his thesis.

If you think Americans are stupid here - you should spend some time outside the US. After being out for a while you can spot Americans a mile away: generally arrogant, incredibly ignorant, demanding, antagonistic, and annoying. It really is embarassing.

Oh man... Where were you precisely?

I'd be highly surprised if the average american reads more

Fuck...we ARE fuckin meek.

You think Americans are aggressive? Spanish and French guys are infinitely more so.

Unfortunately this is true. Americans don't travel well.

Just like Guinness.

I would have to say that in Moscow there was this one Spanish guy who insisted on smoking behind the Kremlin wall (if you´ve been there you know instinctively it´s not allowed) and getting into an argument with the Russian guards. They demanded his visa and passport and I just kept walking. Didn´t see him come out. Spanish people love to do whatever they want whenever they want, including cutting in line.

Have also met some terribly annoying English people traveling.

Ive never been to France or Spain so I cant comment. But relative to us timid fuckers up north, americans are definitely more aggressive. Shit, in Vegas there were dudes that were probably a 3-4 hitting on chicks that were 8-9 (out of 10) all over the place. Now, maybe they had a zillion dollars, but you just dont see that shit up here nearly as much.

We have almost the exact form...

They also assigned people in the different areas to be on a CAT
Crisis Action Team...

Gave out bright yellow hats, whistles, yellow vests, rubber gloves, flashlights and a gay yellow bag to carry it all in...

Dude, If there's a fire, bomb or other bad crap happening, I'm running over the CAT dude if he/she gets in my way...

One of the biggest problems underlying the cause for stupidity in this country is too much information.

But what kind of information? Perhaps one problem is people rely on the tv for news.(everywhere) Also, Americans generally know nothing about their own country´s history or how it came to be so powerful.

LOL, Italian men beat either of those, and I think Greeks or Turks might be the worldbeaters.

Americans actually have very good manners mostly. But when they are abroad they never appear to be having a good time and think that things are still like in the 1950's when Americans were rich in comparison to war-stricken Europeans and they could get people's attentions by waving dollars around.

Sounds like you need a change of scenery. If they behave like cattle treat them like cattle, let them be what they are. Meat for the beast. :D

http://www.bitterfilms.com/rej04.jpg

someone cut that down so i can put it in my avatar.

Where did all this info come from? the past was worse as communications tools (phone, internet, tv, radio) didn't exist and jobs weren't very mental as much as physical. Most americans have about 12 years of formal education. Many have 14 or 16, some have 20.

Besides, we are the most scientific culture in the history of man, and the one after us will be more so. Some of those fat asses will get M.S. or Ph.D.'s in biotechnology or neurobiology.

And, in all, i'd say i spend about 60 hours a week either playing computer games, wasting time on the internet or watching TV. And i am not excessively stupid because of it.

I don't watch MTV though, or reality tv, or wholesome shows.

I agree though, our culture is idiotic. I used to like rap music, but now i can't ignore how ignorant, selfish & willing to destroy themselves for a few $ most rappers are. It takes the fun out of it.

nord - I tried to resize that pic for you, but you can no longer see what it says (assuming that the avatars are max 100 to a side?? it has been awhile since I bothered, perhaps that has changed...

It's definitely TV's fault imho. Just look at all the "Hip-Hoppers". They watch BET and emulate what they see thinking that's what hip-hop is. Bling, violence, being ghetto etc. Ask any of these kids what the 4 elements of hip-hop are and they'll be stumped. Don't even know the basic building blocks of a culture they think they know.

That's because they get up at 5am and reserve allthe sun loungers by the pool

I think the internet is just as bad as television. Just a smaller screen with more channels.
