Japanese come out on bottom, Americans on top in sex survey
HONG KONG (Kyodo) The Japanese are the least sexually active people on the planet, according to a global survey on sexual attitudes and behavior.
The study, which polled 18,500 people aged 16 to 55 in 28 countries and territories, found Japanese make love only 36 times a year, while people across the world on average have sex 97 times a year, up from 96 last year.
The survey, the sixth of its kind, was conducted in May by SSL International PLC, the manufacturer of Durex brand condoms. The results were released by SSL Healthcare Hong Kong Ltd. ahead of World AIDS Day on Saturday.
People in Hong Kong, who have sex 63 times a year, are the second least sexually active after the Japanese, according to the survey.
The residents of the former British colony were followed by Taiwan at 65 times and China at 72 times.
The survey, in fact, showed Asian people tend to be less sexually active than people in other parts of the world.
Americans make love more than any other nationality at an average of 124 times a year, followed by Greeks at 117 times, South Africans and Croatians both at 116 times, and New Zealanders at 115 times.
The latest poll also found that sexually active people have an annual average of 7.7 sexual partners.
Americans have had more partners than anyone else, at 14.3 on average, while Chinese in mainland China have had the fewest lovers, at just 2.1.
More than a quarter of the respondents, or about 27 percent, said they would like to have sex on a beach, ahead of in a whirlpool bath, a spa or a hot tub.
People in Hong Kong prefer to have sex in their offices more than anywhere else, the survey added.
Concerning the world's sexiest city, a third of the respondents selected Paris, while Venice was second with 15 percent and New York third at 11 percent.
Bangkok was the only Asian city ranked on the top five list of sexiest cities, one place behind Amsterdam, which ranked No. 4.
People worldwide are having sex for the first time at an average age of 18, the survey found.
Yet, almost a third of people said they were 16 or under when they lost their virginity.
The poll also found that about 46 percent of the respondents were not concerned about contracting HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted infections.
