What the hell is up with soy!?!?

Was doing soy research for my girlfriend and came across this article titled "Soy is making kids gay".

"Soy is making kids gay"

I thought this was kind of crazy because I live in Thailand where soy is pushed like nobodies business as a miracle cure for everything........and it just so happens that there are more gay men here than you can shake a stick at.

And I mean in your face gay, like there is a [who can be more fruity contest] going on country wide. My girlfriend and I always joke that they are going to take over some day.

From article-

"There's also a serious connection between soy and cancer in adults – especially breast cancer. That's why the governments of Israel, the UK, France and New Zealand are already cracking down hard on soy. "

I don't consume soy - it doesn't taste good, and I have some fear of the photoestrogens - however, there are 2 claims here that I doubt

- soy is behind the obesity epidemic;
- soy causes people to be gay.

Japan are major consumers of soy, obesity is extremely low, and I'm not sure that its gay population is statistically unusual. Considering the typical US diet, it seems implausible to blame obesity on soy, not a particularly fattening product.

A lot of anti food articles, whether it be soy, milk, wheat, carbs are written in an overly impartial tone and do not appear to display scientific neutrality.

There is nothing wrong with soy products, as long as they are not genetically engineered, and they are more natural products.

I would avoid things like TVP, textured vegetable protein, and eat things like tofu, tempeh, miso.

I use a soya protein powder all the time, and all the BBing research also does not show any increase in oestrogen.

If I was (or like I am) trying to buulk, Id stay right away from Soy. Especially the Powder, the Amino Acid count simply isnt as good. Id use it if I were a chick though..........Tatyana

Good point, there is conflicting papers, soya will promote test, soya blocks androgen receptors.

I do think that some soya is good for women, due to the phytoestrogens. Countries that eat soya regularly have lower levels of breast, ovary and prostate cancer.

Oestrogen is anabolic in women as well :)

fuck soy

it does make you gay sim 882 and I will be the only straight ones left then have sex with all the skinny asian chicks. Hey sim, if soy really does make you gay do the chicks in asia turn lesbian? that will hinder my plans for us!

I really think people are deluding themselves linking soy and obesity. The Japanese have the longest life expectancy in the world, consume lots of soy, and do not have "bitch tits" as I said before and are thin- perhaps its sugar, HFCS, fried food, which is US's problems. Gee wouldn't that be an unlikely explanation. (Curiously, my aunty says and I have never looked this up that plastics leak estrogen on to food, and she has a PhD in biomedical science and is COO of an Australian biotech firm, so I should look into whether she is correct)

On another point which I think needs to be addressed:

Do the photoestrogens in soy behave differently to flaxseed meal, which are ligans not isoflavanes.

Flaxseed meal is actually the highest source of photoestrogens, yet many people here consume then anyway, without apparent adverse effects.

I generally consume about 20-40 grams of flaxseed meal per day, simply because it appears to be the most nutritious seed/nut (see nutritiondata.com) and too much PB results in a poor omega 6/3 ratio, and although almonds don't really have this problem, I find them a chore to eat and avocado's are expensive. I can't say I have noticed any side effects of this though. I have never touched soy though, simply because I'm not aware of any advantage of consuming it (I could see advantages for vegetarians and vegans though.
