what is a respectable weight for DB shoulder press?

why should there be a standard? as much as you can do correctly. if you have awesome form, and have had results with the weight you are lifting with, why does it matter? that goes with any exercise IMHO

I agree there should be no standard, but if you really want a number I’d say you're doing pretty good if you can at least military press your body weight for sets.

I'm assuming by body weight you are talking about the total weight of both dumbells? Body weight in each hand would be a bit much... :)

Did shoulders yesterday and did seated d-bell presses with the 115's for 7. Trying to get up to those 125's :)

JG1-
HOLY SHIT! Your definitely a MonSTAR...

:D:D

I'm jealous too. The best I have got up to is the 65lb ers for 7 or 8 reps.

same here I thought i was cool cause I could to the 65ers:(

You know what dude maybe its not that bad. Because at my gym there's only couple guys that can go over 80lbers so wer're still cool compared to most people anyway. :D

I've always had strong shoulders. I've been laying off d-bell presses for a while, and have been concentrating on heavy upwright rows. I usualy workout with 205 for about 6 for them. Just started back on the d-bells though and I have me eye on the 125's :). Started my cycle two weeks ago, so I think I'll be working out with those soon....just as long as my rotator cuff doesn't act up again.

MonStar1023,

I've been training since I was 15 years old...25 now. No, I'm not natural. I did my last cycle back in Spring of 99'. Test/d-bol/winny. While on that cycle, I was working out with 295 on the seated military press for about 7 reps, did 315 for 3.

Just started using gear again two weeks ago. Cyp/Eq

I find the first rep with DB shoulder presses to be incredibly difficult. I can get the DBs to my shoulders, but to get the first rep off is very strenuous. I have to have someone help me when going over 80 lb DBs or I will use all my tricep strength in the first rep and will only be able to get like 2 reps. Even with a spotter I find the first rep still fatigues my tris a lot that my shoulders don't get hit hard enough. Anyone have this problem?

Dacypher, my gym just got an attachment for the military bench that lets you hook dumbells on the racked barbell. So you start the dumbies just below where you would start the bar. It avoids that problem.

DaCypher, I feel you pain bro same problem here I am cool up to about the 80's but 85-95 I need help with that first rep just to get it up and get me started with 90's and help up on the first rep I can get like 8, but without help I struggle on the first and I may only get like 3 it sucks.

Hey Monstar how about 70lbs dumbells for 18 reps on third set? Is that a decent weight, I no longer can do tyhe heavy weight since I haven't trained that way for over a year.
