Torn ACL..F*&*!!!

I was playing football on sunday and when i went to make a cut, my knee decided not to stop. My knee popped right out and i heard a loud pop (even the guycovering me said he heard a pop). NOw i know how some of these NFL players feel. Anyways, the MRI revealed a torn ACL. I am going to have surgery in a couple of weeks. I explained to the dr. that i cant miss training so he said i can so long as i dont use my legs. First, to anyone else that has had this same problem, how did you train, and what kind of routine did you use. I usually do dumbell presses, but cant since i cant carry them around anymore. Any suggestions would be great.

Second, if you have the surgery to repair a torn acl, what kind of recovery did you have? Thanks

primetime21,
I had ACL reconstruction surgery about a year and half ago. I trained my upper body immediately after surgery and went to physical therapy for leg work. Basically you have to ask someone to get the weights for you. Its a pain in the ass, I know, but theres nothing you can do. Its better than nothing. You can do pretty much do all seated upper body exercises without a problem.

In terms of recovery, the first week after surgery is the worst. When you first start therapy they just had me doing hip rotator exercises because I had very little movement in my knee. Then they start you on exercises to increase the ROM in your knee (very painful, but important). Took me about 4-6 seeks to regain most of my ROM and gradually increased the ROM at the extremes (fully extended and fully bent) after that. I still can't fully hyperextend my bad knee as far as I can on my good one.

Don't push your leg too hard, you don't want to injury it again. And good luck bro. :)

just wondering...can using the "outer thigh machine" (glumatis medius, I think) help prevent these injuries?
