Thyroid question...

OK, I've got a very special friend who is in a bit of a bind. She was diagnosed as hypothyroid a while ago, I think she was given a script for Synthroid but not sure if it was doing much. She decided to run a t3 cycle to deal w/ some bodyfat. She ran a ramp up to 75 mcg, then back down to 25 mcg ED. The issue tho, is that her recent blood work shows that her thyroid is borderline shut down. For ex,

Tsh is 0.17, but normal range is .4-51/2
t4 is 2.9, but normal range is 41/2-12

She was told to get off everything and wait 4 weeks, do the tests again & see if things settled back to normal.

In the interim & sort of to deal w/ the feeling of OMG PANIC!, does anyone have any experience w/ this or know more about it / suggestions?

Thanks much!

Sassy, I'm no expert here, but get your friend on that detox diet you use, the one with lots of fruits and veggies and stuff that you go on after competition. And tell her to get the book "Thyroid Power" by R.L. Shames, M.D. and K.H. Shames, R.N., Ph.D. It's really informative and the information is very approachable (and not alternative). This is a book written by medical professionals for lay people who suffer from thyroid disorders and are getting NO help from their doctors, or insufficient help.

Finally, tell your friend it's pretty darn tough to kill a thyroid gland and to relax, things will work out, but stressing over it doesn't help one bit. In the meantime, rest, recovery, detox, and faith.

I hope all goes well for her :)

I was diagnosed years ago with simple goiter, and because of that made all the necessary research in the subject.
One thing is that when a person is prescribed with a certain brand of thyroid hormone it has to be supervised if changes are necessary. If the Synthroid was not doing much, maybe the dosis was not adequate.
Synthroid is T4 and the fact that she took T3 made her gland overcompensate and shut down T4 production.
Hypothyroidism makes the metabolism slow down, therefore increase in weight, maybe that is why she wanted to deal w/ bodyfat.
If she was told to stay off everything and wait, she should do so, and be aware that any attempt to stimulate loss of bodyfat at this point will only damage her gland (by this I mean extra supplementation).
During this time she has to strenght her immune system, eat good and exercise without getting to exhastion. The point is to get energy flowing through her body and detoxicate by natural means. Stress management is also important, thyroid gland is also affected by stress levels.
Something that helped me to recover TSH levels were liquid aminoacids incorporated in my diet, later I knew that they have beneficial properties to the thyroid.
Hope this helps

Thank you ladies! A big concern is weight gain, but I think the whole situation is new to her and scary. She's still learning how to deal w/ the implications and changes.

I really appreciate the input!

I am also hypothyroid. I ran a t3 cycle in the past many years ago. I felt very tired from it during the whole cycle. I should have had ran test before and after. But I was pretty young when I did it. Now about 4 mo ago I found out I am hypothyroid. I didnt know at the time I took it. Shit is scary. I do not take a synthetic replacement but a natural one called naturthroid and it really seems to help. Took some increasing the strength but it works. She may ask for a more natural approach if she detox's and all.

I will not touch thyroid. I have too many friends that shut down their production from it. Diet and exercize does it every time! Why try and find a short cut that could cause serious problems?

Gugglesterones and seakelp *might* help to a certain extent.

IF her blood levels dropped THAT low, imo:

1 - She ramped higher than indicated...

2 - Came off the ramp too quickly

imo - the 25 should have been halved 10 12.5 for 2 weeks and again halved for another 2 weeks
