SAN FRANCISCO - A nine-year-old boy has just finished a pretty tough morning swim — from Alcatraz to San Francisco.

Johnny Wilson, from Hillsborough, made the 1.4-mile swim in under two hours, braving choppy morning waters and rough winds in a portion of the San Francisco bay known to have sharks as well.

Wilson's classmates were waiting for him on shore, cheering as he made it all the way to Aquatic Park.

His effort raised about $30,000 for the Red Cross Katrina Hurricane Victims Fund.

Wilson said the toughest part of the swim was the beginning, because it was cold and windy.

Isn't that supposed to be the hardest prison to escape from? Including the swim?

He just showed up all those would-be criminal escape artists.

he had flippers and goggles what a noob

True, points should be deducted there. He'd get bigger props (and more pus) without 'em.

impressive, that's no easy swim

what type of sharks do they have in the San Fran bay?

and how will this score him poon tang?

Well, chicas will look back and see that he:

A. escaped from a world-renowned prison island that has claimed many prisoners' lives while trying to do the same....plus there's sharks in those waters
B. raised $30,000 for Hurricane Katrina
C. was only 9

Like SublimeZM said though, the flippers/goggles combo won't win any cool-points.

Yeah I'm not making the connection either.

If a shark attacked him and he kicked its ass then I'd agree.

I didn't know any swimmers in high school who hit anything worth mentioning.

Logic is thrown out the window. I'd consider the threat of a shark alone to be more intimidating than anything a football/basketball/whatever player of traditionally macho sports would have to face, yet they get all the play (so to speak).
I'm not saying swimming is badass or anything, but when thrown out into one of nature's most dangerous pools there's something to be said about it being a poon-worthy accomplishment.

When you go to SF, the "Pier" is one of the best places to go for food and the street scene. To the far end of the Pier is a park where you can look out on the Bay.

You can see the vast span of the Golden Gate Bridge and see the "Rock". This is the ocean! It is cold, choppy, deep, full of creatures and stuff. The thought of someone swimming from the Rock to the nearest shore is insane!

This kid is tough!
