Contrary to what Americans think, the French are regarded highly around the world, and are a byword for culture, the arts, fashion, and everything else romantic. The Americans remind one of junk food, Wall street, mindless shootings, and cruise missiles, and now the more recent image, one of a rabid warmonger.
It would not be surprising if the American people paid no attention to the voices coming from the Arab world, since it's obvious that these cross-dressing cowards are some of the most despotic people in the world. But when white men, as white as the Americans themselves, leaders of civilised democratic countries voice their doubts, the response should not be suggestions to ban French wine or some such ridiculous nonsense.
Hitler thought he had a good reasons to get rid of Jews, Bsmarck had a very good reason to start a war, and Stalin had his own good reasons to do what he did. And they all had the trash behind them. Bush now wants to start a war, and he thinks he has a good reason, and the trash is behind him. The intelligentsia were opposed to all these people and they were isolated by the trash, similar to what's happening today.
The French have a significant muslim population, which in simplistic American opinion, translates into more chaos and terrorism, but the opposite is the case. There has been no terrorist acts of any importance committed on it's soil. One factor is that the French intelligence does it's work, well, intelligently. It arrests Algerian and Moroccan terrorists with monotonous regularuty, but doesn't see fit to send it's people into a blue funk about it. It does not see the need to drench it's people in paranoia by declaring code orange, or yellow, or whatever, and implementing draconian laws. It doesn't allow other countries to use it's foreign policy or the vulnerability of it's people as a cat's-paw for achieving their own colonialist ends.
The way the French people united to throw out Le Pen shows the ethos of that society, and that's the reason why they don't need to ask the world 'Are you with us or against us.' American criticism of France evokes nothing but pity for the accusers.
Good luck to America and it's ragtag coalition of the bribed, the blackmailed, the corrupt, and the scared shitless!
