tendonts in knees relaz at 90 during squats...bad?

my bball coach told me that when you get to 90 degrees your tendonts in your knees relax. this is why its bad for oyu to squat passed 90. why is this bad? or is this even tru?
he said you should only go to 80 degrees.

my friend's dad told me today that if i went below just above parallel i would wreck the ligaments in my knees.

i told him to shut the fuck up. :P
 
at 90, the tension is the greatest, not least. which is why its so traumatic on the knees to reverse direction when the knees are at 90. you compound the greatest amount of tension with the force required to not only stop your descent but begin the ascent...that makes for alot of torque at that joint.
 
How can tendons relax anyway? they are not muscles? I have heard a lot on both discussions of the 90 degree of the knee angle, but i am not sure how i feel about either way.

Exactly, when you go below parallel the tension shifts from the knees to the hips, which are much more capable of taking the strain
