Do you think having tattoos affects job opportunities ? I have two tattoos but are not visible with a shirt on . I'm thinking of getting one on my shoulder and bicep but not to sure if I should

I recently hired a dude, who came in and interviewed all clean cut and dressed up. Now I see him in the shop, wearing a t shirt and i realize he's got ghetto looking gangster tats all over. He hasn't done anything wrong, but I'm looking for a reason to dump him.

that's what i'm saying...if you're a special ops guy or something like that, and you have a couple tats? meh...you're supposed to. anyone else better have damned few and a damn good reason. but, ghetto tats?? like that josh hamilton lookin' shit?? nfw...gtfo...you're gone.

Wow fucking guy does what it takes to get hired, probably lucky to be alive. And you are going to fire him for choosing to leave the streets and be a productive participating member of society. I hope your joking or if your serious and you do fire him i hope he goes back to a life of crime breaks into your house in the middle of the night and blows your brains all over your floor and fucks your wife and kids (sons and daughters).

Thank you! People still like to judge a book by its cover, sucks.

If I saw a tat during an interview I would tell them to stfu and gtfo on the spot

having tattoos is more important than being a functional member of society...too bad.

So you are saying that professional athletes like NFL, NBA, MLB players and MMA fighters who give back to their communities by working with kids, the United Way, and other organizations that help under privileged children and families that have tattoos are not constructive members to society...because they have tattoos?

i'm not saying you're a piece of shit, hoss...i'm just telling you what the business world sees when they look at you...that was the point of the thread, yes?? i realize that the truth might be uncomfortable...but, it is what it is.

Wrong.

I am assuming he's a homie. If he behaves and does his job, then no problem. BUT, if he brings any gangbanger shit into my shop or causes problems for anyone, then he's gone.

I'm not talking tribal tats or some artistic theme. I've got lots of guys like that. This guys covered with gang writing.

no...not at all...i'm just imparting reality on you...like woodpile said...prospective employers put you in a different box if you have tattoos...everyone knows that...so, if you get yourself a bunch of tattos, there is a chance that you will have difficulty obtaining a job where you can fully realize your potential...and, armed with that reality, if you still choose to get a bunch of tattoos...that's too bad.

I don't mind tats...have tats myself.

However, I do cover mine when at work.

balee dat

you're self-employed so you literally can do whatever-the-fuck you want...and yet, you cover'em up because you're aware that you're judged poorly for it...right or wrong, it's reality.

maybe if you got face tats or hand tats...but if you cover them up there is no way for a prospective employer to know.

I don't think i'm judged poorly, just seen as maybe less professional.

There is nothing wrong with tattoos. If you go to an interview; or are at work ( depending where you work) cover them up..

do you own a business or are you in a management level position where you are actually in charge of hiring and firing? if not, then sorry...you're opinion (although you're entitled to it) is meaningless.

I have a state job, and a tattoo on my arm. They said it was fine, It's just a dreamcatcher. If I had anything that was questionable, or offensive and I wasn't able to cover it up, I wouldn't have been hired. If you know he can cover them up, and they offend you, just tell him to cover them up. Ask him about them, get the story behind why he got them. You could very well be his savior, maybe he was into that stuff before and hes trying to get his shit together and you gave him the chance he needed. Good for you!

Well I'm
Currently a junior in college majoring in nursing .during the spring ill be participating in clinicals & I know they are goin to make us cover any tattoos visible but I'm just curious how much an arm tattoo will effect me career wise. Reading all the opinions idk if I'm going to go through with the tattoo

Lol thats funny. I own my own business and have managed a few. I was a Ssg in the military. I think your life is meaningless if you have nothing better to do than try to belittle someone who expresses their opinion on a forum.

there ya go! your opinion is meaningful...feel free to expound...

i wasn't belittling...i was simply requesting some validation.

and i have plenty to do...but thanks for trying to belittle me.

Im covered in ink because i want everyone to think im a criminal pos because i hate saying good morning and shit.

yep.. it's like the idiots with the crazy ear ring plates.. wtf..

Such contraversy....
We had a solid mgr working for us and he wore a button down with wrist cuffs buttoned and all. Well we had a bowling night outside of work bonding deal with a client and he wore a tshirt and had massive tats to his wrists. My boss and a lot of other people that i work with said things to me and each other. I'm not knockin it either but the perception was not positive. Has it affected him career-wise... I'd say if a clean cut, pop music listening, uptight guy is above him, then it will.

i think tattoos could actually be beneficial, especially if it's something impressive like a jacked jesus

Now I can see this bro having an issue...

depends on the occupation. Yes it can hurt. Heaven forbid you get a neck one, it can get severly limited.

This is esp. true for women. While tats may look HOT on you as a skinny 25 y/o. When you're 45 and your arms are all tatted up and you've gained weight - good luck finding a job. It's already hard enough finding a job, let alone looking like a trailer trash mom. Guys can sometimes get away with it.

Society has gotten better at not judging by tattoos, I've been a recruiter in 2 dif companies and tattoos had no play in the recruitment process unless they were offensive or they were in the face (no face/neck tats or face jewelry were allowed there), that being said, there are some careers in which it's just not a good idea to get tattoos that are highly visible, specially healthcare and constant customer interaction positions.

Like Woody said with the gang vs artistic tats, the type of tat makes a difference too, personally I have 2 tattoos, both in places I can cover up fine (pelvis and shoulder blade) I'd never get arm tats or even leg tats because whether I like it or not I will find myself in situations in which people will judge me for it.

I'm an ER nurse bro and I work with a few guys that have forearm tats and they have to cover them up with either makeup or a big sweatband. They fucking hate having to do this and the sweatband is hot as shit. I definitely say don't do it. It does look very unprofessional and quite ridiculous.

I think most tats are gay as fuck & I'm in the military.

Lol at some of the arguments people are putting forth to justify their view point in this thread though, quality.

I see both sides. As a US Marine tattoos were obviously fine. I was never judged on them ever and most guys had some. None of my tattooes ever effected my ability to hunt and kill people :-)

I run a night club now and things are different. Showing ink on a busy Friday or Saturday night is fine. But when I'm in meetings with the owners, health inspector, fire marshal, police, or VIP clients, I cover them up.

I'm just as good at my job with or with out tattoos. But unfortunately, people judge people by there looks. How well I do my job, and what kind of person I am on the inside, is not changed by a tattoo.

It's a new Marine Corps now. You need waivers for all tattoos and it will get denied if they are on your neck or hands. The Corps has changed and not for the good now and days.

I bet your tattoos are extremely phagocytic

STFU!!!!!! So what if a person has a tattoo , doesn't mean their not functional members of society. It's called individualism, expression, Art!
Hell in some cultures it's an honor or a rite of passage into manhood. Most of the men I work with all have tattoos , an they're some of the hardest working SOB'S I know, so don't judge a book by its cover.

dont u think its a matter of what the tat is and where it is? having a tat on ur neck is pretty much taking u out of the white collar positions and most blue collar no matter what it is. i have a marine corp bulldog tat on my upper arm that can be seen when wearing short sleeve shirts. ive been in sales all my life and do wear short sleeve dress shirts in the summer so it is clearly visible. i am proud of my time spent as a marine so no way i hide the tat and have got many compliments on it and its never caused me any probs. now if that tat was an upside down cross im sure i would have had many unpleasant issues such as being kicked out of a customers home which would be well deserved. in the past tats were permanant but now theres a lazer device that takes the tat right off so not such an issue anymore.

i know a number of principals and administrators in our local school districts and they're always holding their breath when the weather gets nicer because they never know how many of the new hires have tats until the skirts and short sleeve shirts come out of the closet...the powers that be ALL have the exact same opinion...tattoos on teachers are a bad example for students...period. and, if they catch a glimpse of a tat during the interviewing process, your resume goes in the circular file.

there are a lot of professions where that is still the way it works.

me?? eh, i could give two shits if you have a tattoo...more of my friends have them than don't and i'm an old fucker...so it's not a generational thing perse.

my computer hacker guy was force recon...he has a couple cool ass tattoos...they're related to that line of work and they were obtained during that time period...he gets no demerits for his ink (and not just because he knows like a thousand ways to kill me with his bare hands).

Bro I like your forum contributions right up there there with musclemom but everytime I see "computer hacker" I inwardly cringe, "walty" as fuck mate.

Sorry for the Brit slang, I'm inebriated.

hubs pitches WOMD to generals on the fairly regular and has gone over projects and procedures with NASA with forearm tats uncovered..
he's advanced within his company several times over the years and has several plaques and shit from major projects..and is regularly invited out socially by clients...
a neck, face or hand tat I can see issue with..anything else is absurd.
I know more than a few healthcare professionals with tats that go uncovered.
that said...I'm considering white ghost flames on the underside of my forearm but haven't decided because I'm weighing negative consequences

you touched on something here bro...we've become a society of judeo christian faggots. This whole anti tat things stems from our old testament jewish heritage that says if you adorn your body god won't take you into heaven, or something to that effect. So it's the fucking jews, yet again. These fucking hebrews have been so in my eye since like 3000 BC. The only half way quality joo was jesus and he said to them "cantstandya", so that should have been the end of it. Don't know why we're still following this shit. I really don't.

while i agree with the initial sentiment, that last part was a little over the top homie.

how bout just talking to the dude, get the low down on the tats. Be upfront and say I need to make sure you're not a gangbanger. If he did a stint, got them inside but is now working his way out of that life.....cut him a fucking break dude he's working in a shop. It's not like he's making sales calls.

I interview and hire dudes all the time. I've got a couple other people with full sleaves, hand or neck tats. The problem is that they were open and honest about it during the interview.

This dude covered them all up, and said nothing about it. I already feel like he's trying to sneak one by me.

I bring big name and big dollar Gov't contacts as well as big name consumer product contacts through our shop. I don't want some pathetic ex-wannabe thugs throwing dirty looks at some Boeing contact.

I used to interview and hire people when I was a manager in retail. I hired a really cool black dude with dreadlocks and gang tats all over him. I didn't give a shit, he seemed really eager to work in the interview and I just liked his personality. He turned out to be THE hardest working motherfucker I've ever had the pleasure of working with. He did three times the amount of work than anybody else, and never complained.

It wasn't until several months later that I learned he didn't have a vehicle. He lived roughly 11 miles from our store, deep in the heart of a housing project. His neighbors were quite surprised when a clean looking white kid (me) was driving him home after work. He worked the 4 am truck shifts some days, meaning he was having to walk to work in the cold, rain, whatever.

When I found this out, I had to do something about it. I wasn't going to let a kid this good have to endure that any longer. I worked out a deal with him where I bought him a vehicle. He agreed to pay me back in monthly payments. I didn't charge him interest, I just wanted to do a good thing for a guy I highly respected. I cared more about what this guy thought than what my shithead bosses/managers thought.

I got him a cheap sedan, about 100k miles on it. I paid around $5,000 for it. Never once regretted my decision. For all I know, I broke several rules at my company, I don't really know. I also never gave a shit, he deserved it. He's never been late on a single payment, and even though we live in different states now, we still talk all the time.

Just goes to show you looks really don't matter. It's what's in a man's heart that count.

This I understand, if you got clients coming through the shop....but what do you then tell the other guys with sleeves? Just tell em all to cover it up on days you bring people through. If he's doing everything right why bother? He probably really needed the job which is why he was covering it up.
