Last night in the UK they showed a documentary of Superhuman Giants and i must tell you, i was shocked and blown away.
When you’re over seven feet tall, almost everything you do is affected by your extraordinary size. Not only do you have superhuman height, but your hands and feet are huge too.
The world has shrunk to miniature and every day life is a trial: from buying clothes and using everyday gadgets and furniture, to taking public transport and finding love. Then there’s the relentless questions and stares from strangers day in, day out.
Only three in every million get to become a member of the elite seven foot plus club and in the UK there are currently only 30 people who make the grade.
Superhuman: Giants meets current record holders from around the world to look at their incredible lives and discover the challenges that face those who tower above us.
At 7ft 6 ¼” , 63 year-old Chris Greener has made a living out of his height for almost 40 years. He was crowned the Tallest Man living in the UK in 1967 and since then has been employed to make things look small, appearing in countless TV entertainment shows, commercials and at events and photocalls.
His hands are almost twice the size of an average persons and he has a hand-span of 11” and a size 16 shoe. But his stature comes at a price: Chris has a medical condition called Acromegaly – a tumour on his pituitary gland caused an excess of growth hormone that meant that he didn’t stop growing.
Superhuman: Giants witnesses how Chris’ condition affects his health: with a heart twice the size of an average persons, the muscle is so thick it doesn’t always work properly resulting in irregular rhythms.
This March, a 26 year-old from Durham stole Chris’ crown as the Tallest Living Person in the UK. Neil Fingleton is just ¾” taller than Chris but it’s enough to give him the title.
7ft 7” Neil explains how he gets fed up of talking to people on the street about his height, how he was just nine when he last walked through a door without stooping; how he consumes 8,000 calories a day – three times the amount of an average man, and how it takes 20-25 pints to get him even remotely merry on a night out!
And we see how Neil, a professional basketball player for the last 10 years, fares in Hollywood as he starts to pursue a new career as an actor.
27-year-old Alana Renaud from Georgia is one of the tallest women in America. Now 6ft 11” she towered above her fellow volleyball team players at high school, but when it came to finding a prom date she was left on the sidelines - at the age of 12 she was already 6ft 2”.
Now Alana’s found her perfect match in 6ft 2” Quentin and she’s getting married next year. We join her as she begins the search for her dream wedding dress.
While Alana’s always embraced her height, 28-year-old Ross Sambridge, a supermarket worker from the East End of London, spent years stooping to hide his 7ft 5” frame.
Now, having found love through a Tall Persons Club, Ross is beginning to welcome his height but is devastated to learn that, probably due to curvature of the spine, he’s not quite as tall as he used to be.
And we meet the two tallest men in the world. Until this August, Bao Xishun from Inner Mongolia stood as the tallest man in the world at 7ft 9”.
Superhuman: Giants travels to Inner Mongolia to meet 56-year-old Xishun, who’s known and loved by his fellow countrymen.
Until recently Xishun lived a simple life as a herdsman in the grasslands but his fame bought him to the city where he is promoted – for a generous cut - by a local businessman. His fame has also, finally, allowed Xishun to find love with 29 year-old Xia Shujuan, a mere 5ft 6” at his side.
But, it seems, being 7ft 9” is now small time. As filming for Superhuman: Giants came to a close, an even taller giant was unveiled by the Guinness Book of Records. 36 year-old Leonid Stadnyk from the Ukraine is a staggering 8ft 5 ½ “tall.
