Submissions in Side Mount and North/South

I found myself in these positions a lot yesterday. I looked to go figure 4 from the sidemount but my opponent is pretty good, he wouldn't let me get the leg through. I did have control of one arm so I looked for a choke but that didnt fly either. Is there a way to move to arm bar or a simple choke from side mount. Also, I spun to North/South and had pretty much the same problem. My coach told me what to do he said you need at least one arm, if not go knee-on-stomach and control from there. I kind of forget what he told me after that because I was so damn tired. Any help would be great.

if you are winning the battle for possition that's one feather in your cap
do you know the paintbrush?
it's a crossbody (our teacher's term for sidemount I beleive) submission
really tho to tap him out you shouldnt' be trying to force the submission
you should wait until he screws up then capitolize
although I agree with yoru coach having someones knee in your stomach is a great way to make you break concentration and screw up
btw is this with or without gi?

never heard of that sub...

from side mount / crossbody my favorite thing is to go for an arm lock. i actually have a nice combo .. i start trying to lock up the NEAR arm and fall back for a straight armlock (1 leg over head 1 over body and his arm between my legs) if he defends that by using his far arm i attack that by either popping it up towards my ear or trapping it on the far side of his body.

if i want to go for a choke i normally control an arm and go for a mount.

just keep attacking and trying sub after sub.. if its not there try another.. keep control as much as you can and keep going for the subs..

sidebody with your left shoulder near his head for this example, take your right arm and go underneath your body to grab the top of his right shoulder like it was from his back take your left hand and grab his left shoulder near the neck now pull down on his right shoulder and bring your left arm down so it goes across his neck, be careful, brutal choke.
The americana is also known as kimura or keylock or entangled armlock in judo(i think)

wait that choke you described is called the paintbrush?

and americana = kimura?

Thanks great descriptions too.

im gonna try the 'americana' 2nite from that position..

im not exactly sure but the americana mighe be called okeri eri jime which is a lapel type choke.. not sure but ill let you know how it works out for me..

no the choke has no name, or any that i know of. The paintbrush is the same as the armlock/americana/keylock/kimura really just a variation of a bent armlock from that position. There are different setups to that choke too, let me know if you are interested. Also, let me know how it worked for you.

Kimura and americana (keylock) ar to diff things, on has the forearm up by the head (amricana) the other has it by the body (kimura)

Yeah, pretty cool. I tried the summersault pass on a guy yesterday... I weigh 230 and he is 295... I went into the air and he caught me with his feet and launched me into the sky...lol. Needless to say it was ill advised against a guy that big.

No gi. I understand the paintbrush submission, i believe its called an americana?

my instructor isn't big on names so I often have different phrasing from other people
I think you coudl also do a modified sidechoke from cross body
kata gatama I think is the Japanese for it?

I think the Americana sounds like the one I described
that my instructor calls the PaintBrush

when people shoot on me
I have an easy time flipping htem over my head
and can often rollinto moutn

Theres accually a simple way to go for a armbar from a side mount

Lets say your cross'd over and your head is on his left side, you start working on his left arm while you slip your left leg under his right arm to lever it up, as long as your going for something on the left arm, and do this fast he wont know whats coming, as soon as you have the arm in position quickly grab the right arm, pull straight up and into a armbar, this has worked for me on several occasions, against my instructors(which are very fine grapplers)

Hope this helps!

I don't do it that way I grab the back of their head and use my foot or feet to keep their hips going
it usually works quite well
and considering my size it's far less work then a Sprawl
I stil want to practice Sprawling tho
it's actually like their takedown I turn into a Judo THrow
the one where you grab their uniform foot in stomach and fall back
but instead of the uniform cus they wont have one in mixed, I grab back of head
also cus I don't want to kill them
the sweet part is when I time it right and can roll over to mount on them

and yes that's the sub I was thinking of
from side it would look a bit differnt but I think is still doable
I seem to get it a lot when people are in my guard I can get to that point and it makes rolling them pretty easy

wait do you mean like this:
http://judoinfo.com/images/nauta/tomonage.gif

when someone comes in for a double leg?

sorry just getting a bit lost and i really like reading how you guys are describing all these different moves.

ok it takes me to a general Judo page
tomonage
yes that's it
in pro wrestling they call it amonkey flip!
yes the only difference is I can't get my hands on their gi cus they dont' wear one so I put hands to back of head
(this also rolls really well from their head to help me when I try to roll to mount if you can imagine)
and the foot cannot really get on the gut so instead I do it similar to like what I believe most call a butterfly guard
and I just push up with the one leg (that has been enough I'll use 2 if someone is like 300 lbs) and roll over they go
generally their momentum makes it simple
you should consider using it in practice, in a tourny they may very well consider it you getting put down and loosing and not you countering im not sure

cool sounds a lot more like sumi gaeshi its a really good throw i need a bit more practice with it before i use it in competition but i am going to try to use it more in practice.. i need to work on getting a grip over there back to pull them in tight..

http://judoinfo.com/images/nauta/sumigaes.gif

well I have no training in it and just tried it and it's worked like 4 out of 4 times

yeah sum gaeshi is the footwork of it
but I usually try for the inside of their thigh cus I don't want to get in the habbit of foot in crotch cus the last thing I want to do is roll to mount on someone and have the ref break us to give him a 'breather' cus he thinks I groin kicked him
also the hand possitioning is different
I havn't gone for their arm when I have done it

I also like the look of Sukui Nage
I want to do something similar to that but from the front if I decide to take someone down when they are clinched against the cage
grab the lead leg lift up and sweep the other foot

no not really
ideally my feet would be outside of theirs for this
picture clinched like for striking with me pinning the other guy against the cage
I'd dip my arm down to get his lead leg (unless his legs were even then I'd probubly opt for his left just because my right leg will be forward and easier to sweep that way) so I would hook preferably under his knee but up near crotch might be necessary with my arm in something of an uppercut type possition and lift that leg then the lead leg (my right) comes across to do a really easy 'sweep' of his still grounded foot
ideally there will be relativly little weight on it from the lift I give to his right leg which should offset his hips assuming everything goes well
then boom go down with him and preferablly be in a sort of crossbody type possition
make sence?

wait a sec.. sorry..

i didnt see you said suki nage.. you can do that right from the front.. no need to turn to the side. and you can finish w/ your leg to block/sweep the leg and rotate them around that rather then lifting up in the air then turning them. normally you do that if you can not get the lift because of position. but you can do that pretty much belly to belly and you dont need to duck under the arm either if you get low and drive with your hips.. if you have good body position the person will get locked onto your hip and then you explode your hips up to lift him.. i love this thrw btw

good luck with it..

although it is a legal throw in judo you might want to look up some sambo clips because it is used even more in sambo and you will def. see some cool set ups for it..

in judo it is used a bit more as a counter (IMO) then an attack

ok
also in Judo it probubly dosn't get used too often cus there is nothing to pin the other person up against you have to get them off balance to do it
if they are against the cage that's less worry for me
