Steve's guide to starting your own organic veggie garden

veggies are the most important part of bodybuilding that people do not get enough of. Its been said all our lives that you need to eat your veggies, but did you know that to build muscle you NEED the vitamins and minerals that they have?

lets go through the list of minerals that veggies contain

Potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium and there are more

vitamins

Vit A, B1-2-6, C, K, E, Niacin, folate, panthothenic acid and even more.

the thyroid gland depends on getting an ample amount of veggies to function properly.. many people who have thyroid problems could solve the problem from eating dark green veggies, but choose to go on pills the rest of their lives instead. want to lose weight? eat more veggies.. want to be healthier? eat more veggies.. want to have organ health? eat more veggies. its as simple as that.

but steve veggies go bad so fast! organic veggies are expensive! see next post on how easy it is to grow your own veggie garden..

this is my garden below, it took me an hour to construct it and plant these veggies and now i enjoy fresh veggies daily

things you will need to construct your garden square:

wood, tools, cardboard

place a piece of square cardboard on the ground with small holes in it, this will keep the weeds from growing up into your garden. next you will need to get pieces of wood (many garden stores sell easy to assemble garden squares like in the picture in the previous post) make sure the wood is high off the ground so you have room for deep roots. once your garden square is assembled now its time to grow your veggies.

I recommend organic soil, its about the same price as regular soil.. soil is extremely important with veggies, use poor soil and your veggies will not do well and will not taste good. you can buy it from any garden or home improvement store.
in the pics above i used 6 bags per square.

now as far as the veggies, this is dependent on where you live. those of you in colder climates will have to grow hardier veggies.. spinach, brocolli, kale, parsley, chard, most lettuce, most all herbs are very hardy veggies for example.. your local garden shop will sell veggies that are in season and they will come in pots to make it easy to plant (i recommend you grow them as plants and not as seeds)... you can also plant from seed certain veggies.. beans, peas, root veggies such as radishes/carrots/beets/onions are easy to grow from seed and grow fast.

if you have frost warnings you should cover the plants with sheets.. the hardy veggies i listed can withstand overnight temperatures as low as 18F as long as they are covered and the weather warms back up during the day.. unfortunately if you live somewhere where the temps stay under 35 for the duration of the time you will have to wait till springtime to start your garden, otherwise start it right now to get a jump on the growing season!

you will need to water daily and make sure the soil always stays moist.. veggies love water.. and of course you should plant your garden in an area where they will recieve ample sunlight.. if you live in a warmer climate you should plant them in a spot with partial sunlight as the hot summer sun will hurt them.

this garden will allow you to eat from it and save a boatload of money.. its easy to do.. and you don't have to worry about your expensive veggies going bad the next day. so now you have no excuse not to eat your veggies!

any questions, concerns, opinions please share.

Great thread! I prepared mine this past fall. This weekend having organic soil brought in. Already have strawberries, rasberries.
Planting tomatoes, squash, spinach, zuchinni, romaine, cucumbers, etc.
Also have a smaller bed for herbs.

have you used those upside down tomato planters? I see them every year, and pass on them, but considering trying one or two out to save some space. Seems I have way more things id like to grow than I have space for.

This thread was the straw that broke the camels back... I finally went out and picked up some veggies to start my first garden today. I'm starting small but may get more stuff in the next couple weeks. For now I have: 6 spinach, 6 red romaine lettuce, 6 garlic, 2 squash, 2 red bell peppers, 1 golden bell pepper, 6 swiss chard, and 4 tomato plants. Hopefully I don't kill em all before I can eat em! lol thanks for the motivation steve

Score!!
Thing about it is youll be surprised how many people will say they wished they started one, but waited too long.
Once you start chowing on that organic gooodness, you'll be pleased.
did you get starter plants, or seed?

we've had 2 days of frost where i live the entire winter and the way things are going doesn't look like we will get another one. its been a mild winter all over the country. anyone who lives in the south should definately get started NOW. because once summer rolls around your garden will fry away from what is supposed to be hotter and hotter weather.

u guys in the north are gonna have a sensational growing season soon. i would start setting up the boxes and picking a spot that gets good sun and is easily accessable so you can water daily, dont put down the soil until you are ready though.

i'm eating chard, lettuce, kale from the garden daily. my strawberries, broccolli, and brussell sprouts should be ready in a month.. carrots in probably 6 weeks. can't wait

Steve, you are right on again. With fresh organic vegetable prices up 15% just this past year. It is so cheap and easy to do. Maybe a little fun too. And free tan. My little spread is only 10x15 but, it really is all I need. Will have to post some pics. I have a special way to grow watermelon using coco as the dirt. It rocks out 5 lb melons for me and kids 1 a day. Thanks for making me go work in the garden today.

assesment of my back yard today tells me im going to need to break out my sons 1250fps pellet rifle.
Damn rabbits chewed up landscape plants, and started on my wifes bulbs as they have emerged. Hate to do it, but there are mininal natural predators around, and Ill be damned if Im going to plant veggies for them.

all you need is a fence around the plants like i have in my pic above. something was laying down in my garden or walking in it.. could of been a cat or a opposum as i've seen both around. so i put up that fencing and now they stay away.

rabbits will eat up your garden.. i have a pet rabbit and put her in the garden to let her graze, she ate my lettuce plant in one gulp.. the whole thing. those things have voracious appetites

was not aware they were up 15%.. a lot of that is seasonal.. right now is the worst time of year to buy produce cause nothing is in season except maybe potatoes which will always be cheap.

and i do expect organic items to keep going up in price because its a small margin business and farmers/corporations would rather have conventional farms. plus you've got a re-birth of people buying organic especially among the young and college educated crowd. and a lot of us are now in our 30's now and have that disposable income to spend extra on it. the older crowd doesn't give a shit and just will buy the cheapest thing they can find, they don't know the difference unless they taste it. so that is a good thing for us atleast.. let others keep buying conventional

Due I live in Beverly Hills CO, and it is seasonal. But 15% is on the cheap side. When the farmers market opens in a week the prices go back down. I eat a lot of odd veggies and fruit. That is why this year I am canning food. Sounds old fashion but, I but half a cow at a time and throw it in the freeze.

scratch two rabbits, sniped from my office window. was worried someone would see me and call swat...lol
Glad its trash day tomorrow.

^^^ that is pointless. if there are 2 rabbits, there are dozens more in your area that will replace them. put up a fence around the garden and problem solved. its not just rabbits that you have to worry about anyway.

birds, opposums, even cats will get in there too.

you are correct, about the fence.
installed fabric mesh around the bottom of my fence, had a deal at manards, and it was a brown/gray so it doesnt stand out. Also added a few predator urine "bombs" (cotton in 35mm film canisters)
The two guys that got sniped wouldnt leave the yard, left the gate open and they decided to stay. (my guess is they were hiding under shed or deck)

Is is the fence I put in so the darn rabbits don't take over. Kinda overkill but, who cares. I was going to till it up. Then they are calling for snow next week. Crap Steve you got me wanting to plant. Oh it is 15x20 with built in sprinklers. Fun

nice, my wife would flip if I put up something like that. Have to balance the effective with the "eclective".
Built in sprinkler is awesome, im going to just run some drip hose through mine.

i already have a fence up, nothing will come into my yard unless it wants to be killed by my dogs. and then on top of that i put in an extra fence around for the critters that can climb. problem solved.

i've also noticed in the past tomatoes, cukes, melons are attractors of bugs, so i am not planting those. the only thing i planted that is a risk are the strawberries but as long as you don't let them ripen too much you should be good. yeah there will be SOME bugs which is fine, but i don't want the whole thing taken over.

i let my dogs eat some watermelon which had seeds in them.. also cantaloupe... well guess what started springing up in my yard? they ended up growing full size and made me 2 watermelons and 2 cantaloupes, however the bugs were out of control.. i ended up having to hire a bug service to come out and spray the whole area. it was bad. the melons were delicious though.. anyone who has never had an organic melon right off the vine is missing out, can't compare to the store melons that were probably picked 2 weeks ago and shipped hundreds of miles

My veggies are doin great, except SOMETHING is eating my lettuce!!! Whatever it is hasn't touched the squash, peppers, chard, spinach, or garlic, but when I got home from a 3 day vacation I noticed some groups of holes in my romaine. The leaves with holes also have broken spines, so I'm thinking it's something heavy (slugs?)... any advice on keeping slugs away? I'm gonna go out there in the middle of the night tonight to try and catch em in the act just to be sure of my diagnosis. Would a ring of salt around the lettuce stop them?

I don't have any rabbits in my area but I swear if I see an opossum/squirrel eating my veggies he's gonna catch 32 grains to the face lol.... probably shouldn't say that since I live inside the city limits...

Marigolds are good bug pritection.
Also there are a lot of natural bug deterrents, as well as nutrient options. Theres a great sight for this, when I find the link I will post it.

Come on Steve, you know I am bullshitting. Botanicare makes a great organic watering product. It's mostly soap and organic smelly stuff but, works great. All natural. Last year the bugs got my green beans before I could.

But Neem oil is the shit. I put it on all tomato cages and all fencing. Also just spray around bottoms lighty. Has a weird smell. Works real well. Sounds funny but ant and slugs and those darn beetles hate it.

Steve, I want to thank you so much for starting this thread. I have set up an area at my place for a mini farm to begin next week. So excited, Dude! Totally inspired.

Im freaking out with the weather so warm, need some time to get finished. fyi, scrap sheets of copper around the perimeter will also deter slugs. Also diatemacious earth, its like razor wire to them damn things.

thats why i did this bro.. i help so many people on here with their diets and all of them have 1 thing in common.. THEY DON'T GET ENOUGH VEGGIES!! so this is why i made this thread, its easy for anyone to do it.. you don't have to be a great talent at gardening..

my garden is doing tremendous btw. i am picking lettuce and chard daily and throwing them on my burgers, making salads etc. its awesome and its saving me tons of money.. and its FRESH!! i dont have to worry about my stuff going bad in the fridge which is awesome.

spinach is struggling though.. and it seems like my brocolli is taking forever to get bigger. but i will wait and be patient.. no biggie.

I live in southern California and feel like everything grows here. I already have tomatoes and peppers growing seperately. What else should I grow (in order of priority)?

I can't wait to start mine I have to wait till may long but I'm super pumped gonna go big and try a lil of everything

I have 4 different types lettuce. Peter Pan squash, cucumbers, 3 types tomatoes, bell peppers, banana peppers, halopeno. zuchini. peas, snap beans, raspberries, strawberries, thyme, garlic, chives, rosemary, 3 diff types basil, dill, cilantro, and parsley. thinking about swiss chard, and spinach also.

^^^ Swiss Chard. its a green leafy veggie. sometimes it has red stems. i throw it on my burgers and use it in salads. but you can also use it in soups etc. i like the taste way better than collard greens, you can just grab a few and eat them raw and its good. i do that every morning to get some veggies in my body

Ok. I bought the Chard and I have different lettuce. What's next? Lots if room left.

yeah, I used to do the whole germination and transplant, but now I try to pick up stuff already started, just dont have time.
all the greens I just use seed, also beans & peas...but the tomatoes, squash, etc. I get them already started.
