Step Ups

Does anyone do these - step ups - ? I was told they are good to do but I really don't see any improvement with my legs doing them? Would lunges be better?

i find step ups better than lunges (but i hate lunges with a passion) 2 things. first, do you squat?.... if not than squat instead of either one. 2nd how high is your step up?....... i know this will sound crazy...... but if you want to get the most out of step ups, have your step about 6 inches of the platform up to a foot. you can use a lot of weight and everything hurts real bad.

maybe you need to add more weight? I used to do these a lot more...before I became a squat fanatic. I would do one leg at a time instead of alternating and focus on decending in a slow and controlled manner...makes a big difference.

I did them for three years in college, my strength coach used to like to punish us...ahh the good old days...What you want to do is hit the hamstrings hard with the step up so you need to have the box you are stepping up to just about even with your knee. When you step onto the box make sure your entire foot is planted flat on the middle of the box...you will beat the shit out of your hams this way

I do squats firs, then step ups - I have the box on the second notch - pretty high - one foot at a time, 10 reps, 3 sets - I just figured no one ever mentioned this exercise.
