starting off: advice thread for the newbies

hey folks,

a friend of mine asked me last night what sort of lifting routine he should get into in order to put on some solid pounds of lean muscle. he doesn't want strength, he doesn't want HUGE mass, he just wants some muscle to look decent at the beach. standard pretty-boy sort of thing.

but i figure that a lot of people here are coming for the same reason, and maybe we could lump some training advice into this one big thread so they won't have to snoop around yet and get overwhelmed at the massive amount of info you guys share.

the guy's like 150lbs, 5'9, scrawny, I told him to eat like a motherfucker, but I'm unsure of what sort of routine I'd put him on...

so if you've got any advice for him or any other newbies, share it up.

use basic movements with heavy weights, eat, and sleep.

That's pretty much it, especially for newbies. The hardest part for them is simply to get their asses in the gym. Tell your friend to concentrate on getting in and doing the work. Don't get bogged down with details like we tend to do on this board. Get in and lift, basic movements. You'll learn as you go.

Eat.

Eat, eat, eat, eat, eat, eat, eat, eat.

My number one problem is getting enough food down my throat. I'm incredibly slender, and not very tall (5'7" 125 before I started training) and damned if I have an easy time shoving 2300-2500 calories a day down my throat.

It's a fight every day, but I've put on about 15 pounds (probably more like 10-12) in 6 weeks, and my body fat hasn't really budged.

The lifting is the easy part - heavy, and compound. Anything will do when you're just starting out!

Oh, and make sure the food is decent. :D

Foroverall size alot of food and a routine based around compound movements will work best. but if this guy is going for the pretty boy, underwear model look. then I'd say to throw some iolation exercises in the mix to keep everything balanced.
If you just do

Bench
Deadlift
Squat
Bentover row
Chins
Shoulder press

youll get big fast. but it wont necessarily be a balanced look. Get him doing squats and deadlifts to get his test levels up.

Then A good chest routine with lets say

Dips
Incline Press
Decline Flys
Incline Cable Flys

Then just throw some solid ab shit inthere

NOTE: I Do not condone this sort of preppy training, and feel it is only for the truly lame.
