Sprints - don't over do it...

I read a reserach journal...

Morphological adaptations to sprint training include changes in muscle fibre type, sarcoplasmic reticulum, and fibre cross-sectional area. An appropriate sprint training programme could be expected to induce a shift toward type IIa muscle, increase muscle cross-sectional area and increase the sarcoplasmic reticulum volume to aid release of Ca.

Training volume and/or frequency of sprint training in excess of what is optimal for an individual, however, will induce a shift toward slower muscle contractile characteristics. In contrast, detraining appears to shift the contractile characteristics towards type IIb, although muscle atrophy is also likely to occur. Muscle conduction velocity appears to be a potential non-invasive method of monitoring contractile changes in response to sprint training and detraining.

So don't over do it :)

so what do you reccomend? i'm going to be sprinting 2x a week

Frequency is fine, just the volume.

Don't go 100% .

90% is sufficient, once you reach a fastish speed, just maintain, don't try to go any faster.

You could go all out just once every 2 weeks or something

I used to sprint 3-5x each week. Your body will adapt to sprinting more. I'm sure guys like Michael Johnson probably sprint more than 2x weekly. Go all out brotha.

Well if your not going 100% it's really not sprinting. It's more of a fast run.

LOL -- Tell that to the track coaches at IU... Oh man, that'd be a good one... "Uhh coach, I read this article... I should only do 90% ... the article said not to go any faster" :)

Man, that'd be worth a good 10 mile run. :)

Obviously none of you guys know how elite sprinters train, just pop over to Charlie Francis site and see...

or read his books

Intensity is one thing, frequency is another, just remember that you guys do a hell a lot more in the weight room than sprinters, and yet they even have tempo recovery days...

Whooooa tiger... :) I obviously don't... I only know one way to train by using sprinting, and that is the way the pros in Track taught me to for 4 years. :)

I think I sprinted 5 nights a week during conditioning, during the season, I did it 2-3 days a week... on top of other cardio training... Don't know how that fits in, but I was fucking fast before the training, and fast after? :)

I won't argue with you guys, I have my own beliefs, you guys train the way you want.

All I know the world fastest man in the world ever, trained like this, he wasn't no genetic freak fast at the beginning, but he sure got a whole lot faster afterwards without any plyos or olympic lifts!
