Spliting your Post-Workout Drink in Two...

I am currently drinking a dex/maltodextrin and whey shake immediately after working-out. But after posting another question, I found that it may be better to split this shake into two....

First drink the dextrose (with creatine if your on it) immediately after working out to replace muscle glycogen!

Then drink a whey (protein-only) shake about 30 mins after to start repairing the muscles!

I understand the theory but was wondering from those who are doing this or have done this in the past, what were the results? Did you have better recovery, more strength gains, etc.?

It sounds interesting but I am so used to the "need protein ASAP after working out" thing and the spliting up will delay the protein by 30mins or so.... Just wondering ;)

Splitting my after w/o shakes was the best thing I've ever done. I gained size and strength almost overnight! The first shake (dextrose/creatine) is to spike your insulin and replenish your muscle gylcogen. You should wait 30min-1hr to replenish the protein after taking the first shake. So slam a pure Whey protein shake. Whey is a extremely fast aborbing protein. I then wait an additional 30min then take a dextrose/creatine/whey shake. Then I eat a meal 30min after that.

I think you'll find dividing your after w/o shake is well worth carrying two containers to the gym.

:D

I had a feeling you'd be posting here :D .... actually i would only need to bring the dex to the gym since by time i get home its only 10-15 mins. Thats actually 3 shakes... dex/creatine, then protein, then dex/creatine/protein! GREAT, but how much protein in each drink? 20-30g. I usually take 28-30 after workouts. btw im 5'10 152lbs.

I agree. I do a slight different approach but same concept. If time allows I do the dextrose first. If not I have a 50g dextrose w/ 50g whey shake, followed in 1 hour by another 50g whey shake, then go for the solid food 1 hour later. Slightly different but same concept.

I take 20g of whey w/dextrose before w/o, 20g whey only after dextrose shake, then 20g whey w/dextrose (60g of whey within 120min). Then I eat 50g protein (steak or chicken) with rice or potato. Then I either eat or drink 50g of protein (whey & egg) every 2-3 hrs (don't forget to add carbs)

This summer I'm going to change my pre/post w/o shakes to:
20g whey w/ dextrose before w/o. 35g dextrose after w/o. 50g whey 30min later. Eat a good meal. This will decrease the insulin spike in my body so the fat arround the belly will disappear with min effort.
