Spirolactone, effects of....

Excuse the spelling as I think it is incorrect (!!)

I understand that it is primarily used as a diuretic and can deplete potassium in the body. I also understand it is used as an anti-androgen. I also know it can cause birth defects.

Which therein lies my query. IF it is an anti-androgen, what are its effects on gains (ie., would it hinder building muscle mass in a natty lifter)? During a steriod cycle would it lessen the effects of aas? AFTER cycle would it cause a faster estrogen rebound?

I have been suffering from acne and the dermatologist suggested I use it -- I am coming off a var cycle but I do suffer from acne now and again (aas or not). I am reluctant to use it as I have such a hard time building muscle to begin with.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Tough question, I will try and look into it for you. As for your gains, I do not believe that this will hurt you in anyway. Many, many men and women use topical spiro cream and solution for hairloss. There has been no reported effects on gains.

Firstly...Spironolactone IS potassium sparing....It does not cause your body to lose potassium while reducing the amount of water in your body.

Effects on gains? Won't lose a damn thing while using it for it is not a strong enough anti-androgen. It is used for anti-androgen properties for it inhibits the binding of DHT. Most common oral intake is for an anti-androgen in women for it treats hair loss or excess facial hair...both.

As with any anti-androgen, you will have a slightly elevated estrogen level while on it. If you stick to the small doses prescribed by the dermatologist, I do not see it being a major problem. We are talking anti-androgen. Anti-e's would give you a major problem, like nolvadex for it is the worst with estrogen rebound...

T - thanks. I am extremely worried about this as you know from other conversations. But oddly enough, I was told it DOES screw with the potassium level. Was told this just this last visit as well as while I was on it a few years ago. As a matter of fact, derm wants a blood test to check the levels first.

The doses would be oral, 25mgs 2x day....not sure if that would be considered low dose. It is basically for the acne that has cropped up -- and unfortunately had gotten a bit bad of late.

Thanks for the info.

I'm telling ya...Aldactone doesn't mess with your potassium levels. You are certain it is spironolactone? I was given the exact same thing and it does not mess with potassium. Unlike diuretics like Lasix, it is potassium sparing. I have taken it for acne...Then I was given Accutane.

From infomed:

Spironolactone is a synthetic steroid with an aldosterone-like structure; it acts as a competitive antagonist at aldosterone receptors. The most important of these receptors are situated in the distal portion of the renal tubules. Spironolactone thus inhibits sodium and water reabsorption while sparing the potassium and magnesium metabolism. The optimal effect is dependent on a sufficient sodium supply in the distal portion of the renal tubules, as it can be observed in thiazide treatments. Immediate inhibitory effect on aldosterone synthesis is of secondary importance. Spironolactone is also an anti-androgen.

Cool......I wonder why she wants to see my potassium levels....hmmm...gonna call my sister (the PA and have her explain to me without cluing her in on why).

Do not take any other potassium supplement , if you use the aldactone, like miss torchy said :)

I used it before ; among diurectics, it is one of the safest, if you plan to use it.
