Sodium and water retention

Increase in sodium intake causes water retention

But can you get used to an elevated amount of ingested sodium ?

I mean if you eat the same high amount of Na every day will your body adapt to such a diet and stop (or decrease) its water retention ?

[just like caffeine wich have no/less effect after a while]

potassium : sodium ratio is more significant. Just don't over deplete... your nervous system is highly dependent on both substances. the positive and negative charges on potassium and sodium are the mechanism through which your nervous system sends its signals.

Oh yes, the Na+/K+ pump

so let's say I take an extra 20% potassium (more vegetables for example)

Does that "allow" me to take an extra 20% sodium ?

I've never heard nor read about any kind of "sodium tolerance build up". My guess is that while the body might adapt to constant high sodium levels in some ways, decreased water retention is not one of them.

Keep increasing your sodium intake, and your body will retain so much water that you will spontaneously combust?
