I've noticed lately that my organic bread is made with Sea Salt. I have also noticed that many healthy versions of normally unhealthy products are made with Sea Salt.
Is there something to be said for this stuff? Or is it just a gimic?
Sea salt will have a higher mineral content (iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium, manganese, zinc and iodine) than refined table salt. It will be much more coarse than table salt in its natural state but you can also purchase it in fine and extra-fine grades.
Refined table salt will either be sodium chloride or, in the case of low sodium salt, potassium chloride. If iodine has been added then it will be listed as an iodized salt. In some cases where it is listed as a free-flowing salt, aluminium will have been added.
You can also get 'organic salt'. The 'organic' certification will mean that the salt has been harvested in a very strict and controlled manner from a specific environment.
A defining factor is that table salt, or iodized salt, tastes like shit. Sea salt, like Fleur de Sel, is a completely different world. Try it, you WILL like it.
