I have read your posts and you are so knowledeable! You seem to understand that this is really a discipline and even the slightest cheat can prevent a person from achieving their goals - which is why I am BEGGING for your help!
I know I sound pathetic!
Here is my story - 6 months ago I was in the best shape of my life and then....I took one bite - now 25 pounds heavier I am so addicted to junk food it is crazy! I have all of the discpiline in the world until 6:00pm and if I have a taste of something other than clean food all bets are off! This is unusual for me because I am a very discpilined person - I did not eat any junk for over 6 years and now it is disaster city. I am not physically able to have "one slice " or even one serving of something so a weight watcher type diet is out of the question!
I train hard as far as the weights go. I bench double my weight blah, blah, blah...Cardio is another story - I have a bulging disc which prevents me from running. I have a stairmaster and that does not hurt my back so I can do that. I have my own gym (used to do personal training out of my house) and I belong to 4 other gyms so I have access to equiptment. Diet is my downfall! I am thinking I will try the egg whites and oats am and then the following meals will be lean protein and veggies with the occassional grapefruit thrown in. I also like 1/2 of a protein shake pre weights and 1/2 after. I really can not eat even slow digesting carbs I don't think because I think this will cause me to crave - although i never rreally gave it an hones shot - any thoughts? Can the damage ever be undone?

Yes and no! My husband does the ckd thing so he carbs out on wed. and sat. My daughter is 9 and as much as I want her to eat healthy there is usually something around!

Well first the "damage" can be undone. Especially if this is a very recent thing. It has always seemed that if someone undergoes some sort of major change in lifestyle or shock to their life, they have a change in eating and thus a significiant change in bodyfat. But once the chaos of whatever was the situation has passed & the person goes back to whatever they normally did, they lose / gain the weight & return to normal.

I don't know if you mentioned it anywhere before but did somethign happen in your life in the last 6 months? If so, has it all settled down? Sometimes after whatever iti is has settled down , then you see that your body & your habits / behaviors have changed as a result - then you panic & start trying to get rid of it. When really what you need to do is just get back to "normal" - behaviors & all , and not obsess about it. Somehow obsessing about it just makes it harder to accomplish it.

Knowing that you can't force fast changes in your body and that a consistent diet & training schedule over time will get you your results, it is all about setting up those habits & behaviors that will allow you to accomplish your goals over time. I know all about this & the feeling of failure, uselessness, etc as well as the amazing feelign of 'holy crap, I did it! and it works!" so dont' feel alone or that you haven't discovered the secret. You also made a comment that you havent' given an honest chance yet - this is soemthign that you absolutely have to do or else you are just cheating yourself. Seriously, "who dies" if you DON"T give in to a craving for a day. Give it a shot. Then try again the next day. And the next. Which is more important? The craving or wanting to know how you will feel in a week after avoidign a full week's worth of cravings. All of a sudden, the cravings seem to have little meaning in your life. And then you can spend your energy on other thigns that you will enjoy more in your life.

Another thing that helped me make a transition from just sort of eating what I felt like when I felt, was when I started preparing for my first bb competition. Basically I had been trainin for many years but never focused much on diet or understood much about diet. Basically its like Dr. Phil says "So how's that workin' for ya?" Well what I was doing wasnt' doing much. So I got into the contest prep stuff & totally focused on the competition prep because it was a whole new thing for me and it was somethign that you either did or you didn't. And I wanted it. After a few days of figuring out how to make the food that my trainer had on my diet & make it somethign I could easily prepare & pack to bring to work and eat, I just fell into the habit. Every 2-3 hrs it was simply feeding time. Not "oh i realy want a piece of chocolate" or whatever - it was simply feeding time & this is the fuel I was provided with. Maybe you dont' need to get that anal about it, but it is what it took me to do it.

And like Fantoma notes - don't sabotage yourself by letting junk food be easily accessible. I still can't have any junk food in my house w/o killling the entire package of whatever it is. So I just don't keep it around.

I think you have the knowledge of "what" to do, but maybe you need to adapt to the "how". Come up w/ a diet schedule & try it for a week.

I knew I could count on you! Thanks for your reply. I woulod LOVE to read about competition diet and training - any recommendations?

I'd suggest starting by looking under the COmpetition Prep board on EF. On the women's board you can search around for some posted. The exact prep often depends on the situation & and the person / trainer involved, as well as the experience & amount of familiarity the person has with dialing in their own body.

Thanks again! Just reading that you feel this damage can be undone gives me hope. I am a little scared - I know I control my destiny and I am the one engaging in this ridiculous behavior I just need to prove to myself that my goal can be acieved! I am going to the gym this afternoon and I am psyched for that!
Thanks again for your help!

Congrats! Just don't discount the amazing things your body can adapt to. It is only changing in response to its environment. If the environment is modified to be 'better', your body WANTS to be better. Its sort of like if you buy an amazing car, keep it spotless, run it only on the highest grade octane gas, but throw some mud in the tank as well. It just isn't going to run as efficiently as it woudl like to because there's some other stuff in with the good stufff. It just gets clogged up. So you run the good stuff through in optimal doses - just enough so it has enough to burn, burn it, then refuel so there 's little or no excess. Your metabolism will respond eventually. It may not happen immediately, but it will if you are consistent & balanced with your approach & dont' try to force it w/ pills or whatever. And LOTS of water.

How was the gym?
