To me, it's a personal thing. It would be like someone asking, "Hey gymtime, how's the herpes?" Anyone other than your accountant who asks you how much money you make is asking for one reason, to compare your salary to theirs. There's no reason for anyone to know that and if they ask, they're just sticking their nose in where it doesn't belong.

It's only rude if the person you ask is making a little or a lot... it is kind of none of your business to ask... well, not none of YOUR ... I ment YOUR as in the person asking... oh well, I'm on crack today...

I'm uncomfortable depending on who the person is. Family/friends I don't mind. Complete strangers or people at work I really do mind. Fortunately, no one at work has asked me about that, because I'm sure they'd be very pissed to know that I make more than all of them... bwahaha.
Is it rude? If it's none of your business, it sure is rude.

in high school it was where you are going to college and what your parents do for a living. in college it was, what is your major. after that, it's where you live, what you do, and how much you make. see a pattern.
I hate discussing salary, I'll never tell any of my friends what I make again. I don't make an outrageous amount of money, but I make alot more than most of my friends. It was such a disadvantage when all my friends knew what I made coming out of college. I could never say "I can't afford it" without them talking shit, and if the bill at the restaurant for a big group came up short, they all looked to me.
I don't know if it's rude to ask, but I think it's smart not to tell.
