Roman chair?

Okay, was talking to a friend today, and he mentioned using a Roman chair to strengthen his lower back. I couldn't figure out how one would do that, so we both explained what we thought a Roman chair is:

His Roman chair:

What I don't get is why there are 2 different pieces of equipment with the same name.

Anyone?

Youre sure #2 is also called a Roman Chair? To my knowledge, the first one is a true Roman chair. But i could be wrong.

<shrugs>

If you do a google search for Roman chair...you get both pieces of equipment.

the second one is called a "captain's chair"

the first one is the wussy version of the roman chair. on the old school roman chairs, when you are hyperextended (well, top position of one at least) your body is parallel to the ground. on the wussy ones, your body is at a 45 deg angle.
