A short-term course of treatment with nandrolone decanoate, an anabolic steroid, has a positive effect on body composition in patients with COPD (chronic obstructive lung disease), according to the results of a study in the medical journal Chest.

The researchers found that patients given nandrolone had greater increases in fat-free mass compared with those who received placebo (average 1.7 kg versus 0.3 kg.
While both groups experienced similar improvements in muscle function, exercise capacity, and health status, only nandrolone-treated patients had increases in red blood cells.
Of the 31 patients also being treated with oral glucocorticosteroids, greater improvements in maximal breath-intake pressure and exercise capacity were also seen in the anabolic steroid group than in the placebo group after 8 weeks.
Based on these findings, Creutzberg and colleagues conclude that "nandrolone decanoate has a role in the treatment of patients with COPD, especially in those patients treated long-term with low-dose systemic glucocorticosteroids."
