Review-"Collateral"

Platinum
Starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx.

Highly entertaining.Cruise always takes a lot of heat from people calling him a pansy ass,but he always seems to pull his roles off with a high intensity, and this one is no exception. He is actually a contract killer with a sort of likeable demeanor and coolness/flair to him,and he's a quick little fucker with his gun, like a quick draw Mcgraw, lol.Jamie Foxx gives a good performance as an overwhelmed,mellow-personalitied cab driver who has the unfortunate task of having to drive Cruise around to multiple hit targets, and he shows the gamut of emotional responses that I could imagine one would if saddled in such a harrowing event.Action scenes and dialogue are excellent, and Mann not only directs beautifully, but chooses locational scenes that make the cinematography quite stunning and paint a picture of LA nightscape.Only very slight drawback is the ending, but not enough to take away from the film as a whole.3.5 stars out of 4,quite recommendable-No kids-quite brutal in certain scenes.

Huckster Ebert out-The balcony is now closed. :)

The quality of the sound effects that Michael Mann insists on having in his films elevates his scenes to a whole new level. I have never heard a .45 sound the way it did in this film.

such a great movie. Michael Mann can actually make what in a normal hollywood directors hands would be(ie michael bay, tony scott) a stock action film into a fine tuned thriller. The script you could tell wasnt really worth a shit, but Mann took it to a new level there, Foxx showed he has range, and Tom Cruise was amazing as Vincent. Best movie of the summer.

Totally agree with you guys,Michael Mann is an incredible Director.I was watching "the making of" collateral on HBO,and all the actors were basically in awe of Mann, saying he was an absolutely incredible director, and how much they learned by working with him.I thought "Heat" was an amazing film of his as well.

Bumping this back up...Just went to see it again, and the theater was actually sold out, even after a couple of weeks of playing.Word of mouth is turning this into a classic.Probably my favorite of 2004,along with Bourne Supremacy.

If you haven't seen it yet,do yourself a favor and go.You won't regret it.

Gifted, no doubt. He is probably one of the biggest dicks when it comes to directors, though.
