Mention the drug proviron (mesterolone) and one of the first things that pops into people's heads is the fear of hairs popping off of their heads. Especially those prone to MPB (like yours truly). Since this drug is a derivative of DHT, which is known to accelerate hair loss, everyone is claiming that this mimicking effect is directly causing shedding. Everyone claims that taking a 5ar inhibitor like finasteride will not protect your hair, since proviron is already 5a-reduced. Well I have a theory that goes against this, and may protect proviron users from hairloss (independently of topical ketoconazole, spironolactone, and what have you).
While taking finasteride will not directly affect the proviron, it will reduce your natural DHT levels. How is this beneficial? The sole fact that proviron has been shown to have a much higher affinity for SHBG, with DHT coming in 2nd place! So while proviron has been blamed for directly attacking hair follicles in a way that mimics your natural DHT, I believe that all it is doing is enabling your DHT to do so instead. By binding so strongly to SHBG, proviron is not only displacing testosterone but also DHT. So as free DHT levels increase (which is also exacerbated by higher conversion from now increased free test levels), hair loss occurs. By taking finasteride with proviron, you offset this increase in active DHT levels that is responsible for hair loss.
My personal experience confirms the theory. I'm currently on 400mg test plus 600mg EQ (both well kicked in), and decided to throw in 50mg proviron ED to increase free test levels/libido. Before the proviron I had no itchy scalp. A day after throwing in the proviron, it started itching like crazy and I started losing some hair. I have now added 1.25mg finasteride every day and no more itchy scalp.
What do you guys think of my theory?
