protein increases metabolism by 30%?

two unrelated articles i read today both said this. But i don't get how. Is it because of gluconeogenesis (whatever its called when protein becomes glucose)? ANd what kind of 30% boost are they talking about, like the BMR is boosted by 30% while the protein is digested, which might be 2-3 hours?
 
Come on, somebody must know more about this and im having trouble finding details on the net. Is this boost a BMR boost or what? a BMR boost wouldn't be nearly as strong but its still pretty damn good if its 30% after each protein feeding.

What is the minimum protein intake to get the boost, what is the maximum where teh boost doesn't matter anymore? If its lower then maybe i can eat 7-8 protein meals a day instead of the 5 im doing now.

I've been taking about 2 shakes (45 grams protein apice) and about 3 high protein meals a day. my intake is low compared to most peoples on here (only about 160-180 grams a day) but im more worried about dieting than bulking right now. is this a good set up, eating 5 seperate high protein meals a day, usually within 3 hours of each other?

I already knew a protein meal can boost metabolism but i have not seen any details on how, or how much protein, or what kind of metabolism (BMR vs daily maintenance), or the effects of exercise in conjunction with high protein meals, etc.

i've never heard anything bout this b/4... ima bust out my books and check some net sites, i'll post on it tomorrow. Bump for Mr. X or anyone else who seems to have mastered the human nutritional science.
 
Thermic effect of food. I think. Protein simply requires more effort to digest than any other macronutrient.

It takes far more energy to break down protein than to digest other nutrients such as carbs. Usually, about 10 per cent of the total calories you burn in a day are spent digesting the food eaten. When you increase your protein intake your body uses more calories to break down that additional protein, and hence you speed up your metabolism.

How much you boost your metabolism by would depend on what percentage of protein you've increased your daily intake to, compared to what it was before.
If you're getting say 40 per cent of your daily calories from protein, and increase it to 45 per cent, then the metabolic effect would be minimal.
If however you were getting 15 per cent, and upped it to 40 per cent, then you would increase your metabolic rate significanty.
 
protein burns 20-25% higher calories to be broken down into individual amino acids, Fat and carbs are in the 3-6% range to break them down. But the thermic effect of food only accounts for 10% max of metabolic rate. So for most diets, it won't play a significant role. But if you jack protein up really high (like 2g per lb) at the expense of carbs and fat, then it can contribute to a fairly significant amount of fat loss over a few months period of time.
 
Yes, protien requires, per calorie, more energy to absorb, and assemelate than other micronutrients, but the body eventually adapts to yoru new protien intake. For example, if you ahve been eating 100 grams of protien a day, and switch to 300 grams a day, you will boost your metabolism alot (not 30% though), but after 4 to 6 weeks, your body will adapt, and the metabolic advantage will be gone. Yes, there have been studies done on this.

yeah thats what i was thinking. But technically whey is real food, it is a byproduct of cheese.
