I've heard some things about this product....i just wanted some feedback from people who have used it. Do you like it?? How does it work? Anything negative happen to your skin from it? Is it a must for competition???....just curious

It is T H E fastest way to get a tan!!!! When I use to use it (my friends and I would have ProTan Painting Parties since we couldn't reach our own backs), you used a foam brush and brushed the stuff on. It's DARK brown and a little hint of orange in there. You paint it on and sleep in it. It makes a MESS so you need to wear old clothes and sleep on old sheets. The DHA in it starts to stink when it forms the bond with your skin (chemical reaction). It's basically putting dye and self tanner on your skin. No health concerns with it....just don't drink it! lol

Two other ways to put it on:

1) Find someone who does spray tanning (not the one in the booth) -- you bring a couple bottles of protan, they put one bottle in the spray container, pump up the compressor & spray away. Make sure there is an excellent outtake system. If you know people who offer competition prep services, they may know someone who does spray protan. I got 3 layers like that last year + my own touch up.

2) Instead of the spray & paint w/ the brush, pour the bottle of protan in a plastic container & get a good cosmetic sponge and use that to put each layer on. Make sure you put it on evenly & catch any drips. THis seems to work pretty good & goes a bit faster than the spritz & brush.

Both ways, at least for competition, requires at least 3 layers over a good base tan, sleep in each layer over night, shower it off in the morning.

I've used Pro-tan and it worked well, but I definitly needed to put more layers on. I did three applications, then applied as needed at the comp. I'm very fair, so the feedback I got from the judges was that I needed to be darker. A lot of girls used dream tan at the show and it looked awesome! Next comp, I will use pro-tan, then dream tan at the show.

As a judge I personally never liked Dream Tan and was glad when most Ohio competitors stopped using it. It is harder to judge and it makes you look a bit "blurry" or clouded. If you are going for a dryer, harder look - it certainly detracts from it. Protan has better products out now. I used Pro-tan (7 coats) for Junior Nationals in 2003 and then put a new Pro-tan product on top before going out on stage. It has a heating element in it to create more vascularity, but the color was beautiful.

Another faster method for tanning with this product is to use a small mini paint roller and just roll it on your body. You will be incredibly amazed at how much time is saved. Cuts about 60% of the time down from the old application methods. My brother 'tans' about 10-12 people each year during comp. time and he came up with it. He is a Pro-tan master and this was his idea. Really works.

And by the way - Protan is the stinkiest, messiest (until it sets) and hardest to get off....BUT is the BEST hands down. :)

That roller brush is a good idea!

Also if you can stand in front of a big fan, it get the fresh layer to set You can be a bit sloppier w/ the first layer, but you want to get it thick & solid coverage as a base for the several layers.

I've got a local guy here in ATL who does the spray tan stuff & it worked great. Three coats + touch up worked fine for me. I'm not sure how I feel about protan on my face tho I got the full body spray job - my face was really dark, but by the night show, it was starting to crack a bit and the worst part was that some of it came off where the toothpaste leaked out of my mouth a bit after I was so careful to not touch it or anything. By my photoshoot the next day, my face was gettign a bit crusty. I'd probably go w/ possibly 1 light layer and then get some really good dark foundation & stage make up approach on the face.

I used ProTan for my shows - 6 coats over a base (tanning bed) tan..... never on my face - just used dark makeup....

Was told my color was perfect....
