PMS & AS Bloat & using a diuretic....

Puddles

New member
Situation:

OK...lately I've been holding a solid 4+ lbs of water during my monthly PMS bloat. I've been on a 50 mg/wk cycle of prop for 4 weeks and it's PMS time and I'm a solid 10+ lbs heavier than I was only a week ago. I feel it everywhere, my belly is distended, my fingers are kinda stiff from water retention, ankles and feet puffy, indentations in my skin from socks and even just laying on a wrinkled sheet in bed, etc. (ie. I've had my sandals off for 1 1/2 hrs. and the marks are still there, almost gone, but not quite) Normally I'll use a diruetic, Furosemide 40 mg. two tabs, one time and I loose enough water to make me feel comfortable. (This was a diuretic prescribed to my father and he gave me a bottle.) I've been taking dandelion root to help prevent AS cycle bloat, but at this time it's not helping. I've also been craving and consuming more salt than normal this week.

Questions:

I'm thinking I should go ahead and do my normal dose of diuretic tonight and see how I feel in the morning...but if I'm still retaining water, should I go for another dose? The prescription says to use it twice a day. I will be drinking pleanty of water to help as always.

I've read where diuretics can be dangerous. What should be done to prevent the dangerous effects of using a prescript. diuretic? Potassium supplements? Eat a bannana?

Is a 10+ lb. gain in a week during PMS and a prop cycle usual?

Should I lower the prop. doseage a little? If so, should it just be during my PMS or should I lower it for the rest of my cycle. I'm at about 50 mg/wk, injecting 15 mg EOD, sometimes missing a shot and getting it half a day late putting me at a little under the 50/wk.

Thanks ladies. :)

Mrs. P...

Because you have been using only 80mg of Lasix/day...your body has probably adjusted to the amount of the medication, therefore it's not working as well anymore. You would be fine taking more Lasix, actually, and it would definitely help you out.

Adults can have up to 600mg/day of Lasix in 6-8hr intervals. So...don't go overboard on it...but you could definitely increase the dosage and it wouldn't hurt you.

Also, do you take the Lasix only on the days before you start your period or is it an everyday medication for you?

If it's only when you are bloated...your body has to get used to the dosage over and over again when you start taking it/stop taking it. For the full benefit...you could take it twice a day for 3-4 consecutive days each week. That would allow for a maintenance dosage and you would benefit from that as well. That is only if you wanted to take it that often. If not...just increase the dosage for the days when you do take it and your problem should be solved. :)

Hope that helps. :)

Here is what my drug book says word for word...just so you won't get confused. :)

For edema: Initially, 20-80mg/d by mouth as a single dose. If needed, a second dose may be given in 6-8hr. If response is unsatisfactory, dose may be increased in 20 to 40mg increments at 6-8h intervals. Intermittent dosage schedule is preferred for maintenance. Up to 600mg/d may be given.

Thanks, nurse NightFly! I should have just called you. LOL

I only take it once a month, two 40 mg. tabs and I'm done. (That's my "usual dose.")

OK...I'm takin 2 tonight and will see how I'm doing in the morning. This will be helpful for a good night's sleep, huh? LOL If I'm still feeling full I'll do another, that'll put me at 160 which is apparently fine. Thanks for the info. Since it was prescribed to my dad I wasn't sure about normal doseages.

600mg?

You'll end up in the hospital or dead!! Do you remember MoMo? That's an insane amount of Lasix. Especially for someone of your stature. You'd better be on a potassium and sodium IV if you'regoing to try that amount.

The 600mg is the max. amount. I didn't mind telling her that because I know that she would never take that much!

Anyway, Mrs.P don't take this stuff at night or you will never get a full nights sleep! You'll be getting up in the middle of the night to pee and who wants to do that?

:)

OK...I'm feeling a LOT better. Was up much of the night eliminating but I think it was worth it. I'm not going to take another dose now because I feel like I've achieved the relief I needed. I'm still curious though...is it usual to retain large amounts of water when on prop? I'm hoping the bloat doesn't just come right back on. Grrrrrrr!

600 MG may be given for Patients with severe pulmonary adema, but it is always given IV along with a potassium supplement to minimize loss. The most we ever gave at the hospital was 400 over a 24 hour period and that person had so much fluid on their lungs you could hear the rattling when they breathed.

IV Lasix and Oral Lasix are not the same animal. Oral Lasix is much harsher to the system as are it's effects on mineral balances. Even @ 40 mg a day for a woman of Mrs. Puddles size she should be supplementing with potassium and magnesium.

All I'm saying is be extremely careful with Diuretics, they can be deadly if misused (as can any drug) I didn't mean to offend anyone.

MrsPuddles, prop makes me retain water without an aromatase inhibitor, easily 10+ ibs, but then again I'm a man and on higher doses. You're using test? Hmmm...guess your husband isn't getting any sleep right now. Hope he is at least on a cycle.

LOL...yes, we're both on cycle together, but unfortunately this week has been hectic (Mon & Tues I was away, then Wed - Sat he's away). He comes back home tomorrow afternoon and I'll be waiting impatiently!

I've posted up on a few boards about this and it seems that some people, both men and women will tend to retain water on prop. and others won't. I weighed in tonight at the gym and am up 5 lbs from 2 weeks ago, but that's fine, it was the over 10 lbs that was physically uncomfortable.

I'm gonna stick with dandelion, keep my diet lower in salt, drink extra water, and then hopefully I'll be somewhat back to normal in a week.

JBR...thanks for the concern and info. I took potassium last night when I took the diuretic. I don't have magnesium by itself but it's probably included in my multi, I'll check. I won't be using a diuretic again until next month, if I need it. Based on what you've said though, next time I'll just use one tab (40mg) and see if that works well enough. Question for ya on the pot. and mag., how much should I be taking? I'm 5'3", today 158 lbs (that's after loosing at least 5 lbs of water this morning) and 2 weeks ago I was 153, 16% bf. Also, what are the warning signs that go along with taking too much of a diuretic?
