pharm school or dental school?

Hey guys, i am just finishing my undergrad at stony brook and i got pretty good grades about a 3.3 gpa in psychology bs degree. I have taken alot of sciences courses and love science.

You guys always seem to help me out and i figured id give it a shot and see if i could get some perspectives.

I am trying to find the career that suits me best, and i want to make some good money. I am torn between choosing dental school or pharmacy school. I might be leaning to pharmacy school because i read that the workload isnt as intense as dental school. And they seem to make close to what dentists make. I dont know if you guys have any input id greatly appreciate it. Thanks guys.

With a 3.3 in Psych you won't have your pickings.

Apply to all ... then chose from the programs you get accepted into

I'd be a dentist if I were you...pharm industry is in the government crosshairs all the time, and pharmacists will have the squeeze put on their salaries as pharmacies are regulated out the wazoo on the markup they can apply to drugs and the dispensing fees they are allowed to charge.

I'd go with Pharm, do you really want to be looking into people's nasty ass mouths and having to smell their breath for the rest of your life??

pharmacy is on its way out. All pharmacists will be located in single call centers in some big cities. Pill dispensaries will be completely automated (invest in pyxis). Algorithms will be written to analyze drug interactions, or you could simply google it, retard.

Pharmacy R&D is a different story however - though there are limited options.

With people's shitty food choices dental hygiene will continue to decline. Here's something to think about though... among professions of white males in California, dentists had the highest suicide rate of any other profession. High up there was chemists.

Either you know you like to work closely with people or not. If you like to work with people, aren't squeamish, and are very, very patient then consider dentistry or any of the various specialties (i.e., orthodontia). If you aren't very compassionate, or the idea of staring into mouths in any way puts you off (and there can be some very horrifying sights inside a human mouth) then go into pharmacy.

There will be plenty of jobs for pharmacists for quite some time in the foreseeable future, especially so with the aging of the country. Since many older people can't drive, pharmacies will still need to be all over the place. And really, no machine can replace a human, there will always need to be someone who reviews your current medications and can confer with physicians. A pharmacist's job may change, but it will never be utterly eliminated.

Living and travelling in Asia, I can't say I would go into Pharmacie school. I know they make good jack here but pharmacies there were box retail stores with the pharmacist being not much more than a cute girl that could also run the register. They knew their drugs - sure they had a degree but bet they don't make more than $10k per year.

With e-commerce etc and globalization, I just can't see it attracting premium salaries long term. People always need their teeth fixed.

i have a couple/few dentist clients..they work 4 or 5 days a week and pull down $300,000 +/- (net). I have a number of pharm clients too..the regional managers aren't even making that kinda scratch anymore..and i doubt that the v.p.'s are either.

shit, my dentist clients are making more than most of my doctor clients.

I dunno, there's lots of fields that has been said about in the past and they're still going strong. With America's love affair with the pharmaceutical industry, I don't see it going the way of the dinosaur for a long, long time.

I think dentistry requires a degree of passion. It has to be something you're interested in and you really have to care about people, you need to have an eye for aesthetics and you really need to be empathetic to people and sympathetic to their fears.

Well - it certianly first is about your passion. Remember, Dentist have like the highest suicide rate.

But as far as long term earnings potential, Dentist is going to win out.

I have a lady friend who is a Dentist in Asia. Owns her own clinic, very wealthy. Again, pharmisict sit in the back of Boots pulling in slightly over minimum wage and that is if they are pretty.

That is how it will be in the US if we ever get our health care system sorted out. I mean, exactly why do you need to pay a pharmasict big $$ to fill up a plastic bottle of pills your Dr. ordered. Totally obsolete profession - really.

I have close friends that are Dentists and Pharms. A dentist makes way more $$$ big time!! Infact I make the same as my pharm friends... 80K +

Your GPA is pretty horrible, and your school isn't anyting special. We need to know your test scores.

You'll be footing a six figure bill if you can get into a lower-tier dental school. Pharma isn't really an option with your grades.

The BIGDENTAL salaries you're thinking are so easy to get are for solos hanging their own shingle. Will you have a few hundred k for startup costs? Do you have any UG debt?

You definitely need to explore your realistic options in detail. Find a dental admissions board or something. Things aren't as simple as they might seem.

:cow:

3.3 is honors isnt it?

Don't listen to Samoth...not everyone is a genius like him.

i know nothing about dental school, but i do know that pharm school isn't easy, and there is A LOT of competition. my old roommate who went to a better school and had a better GPA BARELY got in after doing well on PCATs as well.

Gauging on your current level of passion.
Not Dentistry.

read what I wrote. pharmacy will die - it's been an over paid/over saturated field for way too long.

i really don't think it will. pharmacists are a lot more than just glorified pill counters despite what most people think.

this. lol @ pyxis. yeah, they use them in hospitals, so? They still have pharmacists in hospitals too. Don't believe what you watch on "Nurse Jackie".

Many pharmacists don't even touch drugs. Many I know work 9-5 in offices and make $100k++. Dentists make more, but samote was pretty spot on. That kid's no dummy.

Everybody's on some fucking prescription drug these days, and the trends are continuing to grow in that direction. Drug companies market directly to the consumer, lol if you think that's going to stop soon. The pharmacist profession will be around for a long long time (forever). So will dentistry. But good luck with that 3.3. Sorry.

1) A 3.3 gpa really limits your options greatly.

2) Pharmacists have a great future because they'll only get more power over time. Thanks to health care "reform", enablers are going to pick-up a lot of new responsibilities which include NPs, PAs and pharms writing prescriptions for a fair number of drugs.

3) Dentists have a great future because our ever-expanding healthcare system will eventually cover teef and every shmoe with a busted grill is going to become a one-person $35,000 stimulus project. Go go meth!

Take it from a Pharmacy Tech..... Pharmacists save a lot of lives correcting the terrible medication errors the "doctors" prescribe.

They do a lot more than Doctors(they are fuckin morons) as far as I'm concerned.

And Pharmacist (and Techs) are ALWAYS in demand so much so that there is a very strong rumor going around that we are about to get a 30% bump in pay across the board.

oh..hang on..i wasn't thinking pharmacist, i was thinking pharmaceutical...like the business world...my answer is still the same...i have pharmacist clients, some are even pharm d's, and my dentist clients are still eating their lunch.

and 1/3 of that would be going to malpractice insurance, at least in IL it would be. Is all about what you're willing to deal with i'll say. F that whole business of people squirming in the chair. I don't have the patience for it

my dentist clients don't have particularly high liability insurance...now, you wanna talk high liability insurance? i have an anethesiologist client...his liability insurance is 300-grand per year and the muh-fugger never even killed anyone on the table or got sued for anything...that's CRAZY!

Digi would know because he has first hand info.
You have to take that dental test. (forget the name)
If you do well on that then you could be in good shape.
You must take the test before anything though.
From there you can see if you can get into any schools.
