how much money am i looking at if i wanna hire a pt? i know to steer clear of the sloppy gym trainers, however i do want a good trainer that will do his job

i'd suggest two good workout partners over a PT, all the help you need without having to pay.

all depends where you live, where you train (home or gym) and what they specialize in?? also do you want nutritional work done and bodyfat testing. The more you want, the greater the knowledge and skills of the trainer has to be. Education & certifications are great but experience is the key! do they have a portfolio of past and current clients that you can contact for refference - the results they get others is your best guide.

Also don't get one of those ACE assholes, they pass a multiple choice test and call themselves a trainer! I can't wait for the industry to become regulated by the state medical boards and all these "trainers" will have to pass rigourous written, oral and practical exams to get a license!!!

S

P.S. I can call ACE trainers assholes because I was one! - didn't know shit about real training but I got a piece of paper that said certified trainer and was hired. Then I got a BS, MA, PES, CSCS, watched about 300 videos from the CHEK insitiute, NASM, Ian king, Westide Barbell, Dave Tate, trained with USAW, went to dozens of seminars and try to read every book Charles Poliquin. Dr. Colgan and anybody else with a brain and now I am finally getting the confidence to consider myself a real trainer but not done yet -starting Neuromuscular therapy certification next week and hopefully my Phd next year! This is the type of dedication you want! someone who lives to make themselves and others excel not a friggin part-time actor/teacher/garbage man etc. who trains for a few extra bucks and gets the all info from Joe Weider! (I F'in hate Joe Weider!) - shit I gotta lay off of the clen and caffeine; oh well hope this helped.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Personal Trainers???

I would say that average prices range from $40 to $95 a session depending where you live and where you go.

I strongly believe in doing your homework and learning as much as possible on your own. It's probably not a bad idea to get the materials and get certifiied yourself. It's really not that difficult. I'd probably recomend NSCA and NASM certs.

Ok...To answer you question more directly, MOST TRAINERS DON"T KNOW SHIT. Please excuse the language.

I have Both NSCA CSCS and Advanced NASM certs. Most of the knowledge I have isn't even applicable to most people. I've worked as a personal trainer for about 4 years. During that time, most people just needed a friend to talk to. The majority of the trainers know this and work in this field because of the flexible hours and decent pay.

I would not get a trainer to gain knowledge but I would get one to keep me in check and bust my ass.

Put it this way. I hired Aaron Baker (Gold's Venice) in the past as my personal trainer. Not for his knowledge about training but primarily for the motivational factor. It's amazing how hard your will bust your ass simply not to look like a pussy in front of someone like that. I was already educated well and experienced in biomechanics therefore form and safety wasn't a problem. The main thing I learned from him is that you've got to BUST YOUR ASS DAY IN AN DAY OUT BEYOND YOUR LIMITATIONS along with some nice little common sense tricks that the pros use.

BTW...He was only $60 for the hour.

i need undivided attention. im to anal/serious about my goals...too much b.s with friends as work out buddies

If you don't know anybody who is as serious as you, or can push you like you want to be pushed in the gym, then PT is the only way to go, but I don't know the pricing on such a thing.

I'm a trainer and we charge $85/hr or $60 for 30 min. Everything that people said here are right but I would like to add to that. What I notice is that alot of people want a trainer so they are able to stay with it. They have an appointment that they must go to or you get charged for canceling. It makes you discipline in doing your routine. Plus some people need that extra push from a trainer which they cant do on there own. When one of the trainers at my work trains me, I have a great workout, same the other way around.
If someone tells you 5 more reps at the end of your set when you would have stop at 1 more, those last 4 reps make a huge difference in the pump and burn in the muscle, and doing this requires your body to use more motor units that you would normally not trigger.

Holy Shit ! $85.00/ Hr; I am severly underpaid! I only get about $45.00 after the clubs cut. But I have benefits, salary, commision and an office as well as access to members and equipment so I don't have to purchase anything

The best Poliquin books are: Poliquin Principles, Modern Trends in strength training, winning the arms race is pretty good too as well as his CD - The Science of Bodybuilding

The best Colgan books are : Optimum Sports nutrition, the sports nutrition guide book, the new power program, and his protein, essential fats and posture handbooks are excellent - he has lots of other great stuff but they are the best!

There are tons of other books too numerous to list plus all the great Westside articles on the web.

P.S don't forget some really great posts in the Elite training forum, some of our Bro's are awesome and everyone tends to specialize in a different area.
