Okie Crew Invades The Asylum

Hannibal

Elite Mentor
Platinum
Today was what powerlifting is all about. The Okie Crew hopped in a car and drove several hours just to lift with us. It was an awesome day.

First we did what all good powerlifters do...we went to the All You Can Eat Buffet. Tanked up on food...and then it was time to TRAIN!! Started off with 2 Board Press (some with shirts and some without). I think EVERYONE hit some very impressive PR's. I cannot stress enough how much motivation there is when there is NEW BLOOD in the gym. It was good for me to get my ass kicked today...made me HUNGRY!!

Let me see if I can get the numbers right....

Benchmonster "shirted": 520 (tried 560 and got out of the groove)

Screwball "no shirt":441

Hannibal "shirted":441 (missed 419, came back and got it then said "FUCK IT" and got 441...44lbPR)

BigOkie "no shirt":331 ( I think...and dont know if he got a shirt press down)

Project "no shirt": 265 (22lbPR)

Spatts: 221 (188 was old PR...33lb PR)

I apologize if the numbers are off. After that we went into the new "magic lockout move"...and then Bench showed us all how to do JM Presses the right way. Then for another hour or so we sat around in a roundtable type discussion and exchanged lifting ideas. Thats what so great about powerlifting. After that went out for BBQ...and sat around for another couple of hours talkin about everything under the sun as it relates to powerlifting.

Today was a good day....thanks to the Okies for coming up...you are ALWAYS WELCOME.

lol i knew you were strong, but i didnt know you could 2 board press 441 lbs...wow..

Yeah the learning curve on the shirt is STEEP...learning quickly though.

Actually very excited about my bench now. Gonna get me some new triceps between now and Dec.

Let me extend a warm thanks to the KC crew. We really appreciate you guys having us up. It was a great training day. Very nice to finally meet you guys in person.

Can't say enough about how nice everyone was. And smart and strong and motivated to improve. Awesome day. Everyone set PRs, which is what it is all about. I always have a great day when I train with the Okies, and this was no exception, although it may have been better than usual.

Great facility in the Asylum. Wonderful setup, and although we were not squatting today, I must say that Hanibal's reverse hyper, which I had to try out, is by far the nicest one I have ever used. Very sturdy and smooth. A great gym.

The Asylum crew all stepped up to the plate and cranked out some serious PR's. I had a great time, built some new strength, for sure, and I hope everyone else did as well.

And for those who have not had the pleasure, you are missing out by not meeting these folks in person. I am glad I was able to make the trip. And you guys are welcome in the Dungeon any time at all.

Definitely something that we should make a "regular" thing. I need to get my ass kicked at least once a month...now THATS motivation.

That's awesome that you guys all got to train together and show everyone your different styles and techniques.

I think the NY/NJ crew needs to meet up with another crew. Who's the closest?? We need more crews dammit.

Great job to both crews!
Glad to hear about all the PR's as well.

Did you take many pictures???????

Hannibal what are your stats now? Great job on the 441 by the way!

Thanks for coming up guys! I had an awesome time. We HAVE to do this again soon...regularly.

I got a lot of new tips and tricks to try, and they MAY HAVE actually gotten me excited about wearing a shirt. ;)

Shoot, when they start talking about 50-150 pounds jumps, my ears perk up!

...ok, no "perky" comments!

i think your the only one with a home gym.....

Thanks to the Asylum Crew! It was great to meet Hannibal, Spatts and The Project in person. They are all very genuine, motivated people who take thier training very seriously. I was super-impressed with their knowledge and lifting technique. Hannibal has an awesome home-gym with all of the necesssary equipment. However, if the gym gets much stronger they are going to have to buy some more weight to throw on the bar.

:D

The trip up to KC was easy and uneventful. The day went something like this: We ate. We talked. We trained. We talked again. We ate again. We talked some more. Now those are the kind of ratios I can deal with. Next to actually training, "talking shop" & eating are also high on my priorty list.

We will have to set something up in the next month or two, to do it all again. Keep up the good work, Asylum Crew, and thanks again for the allowing the Okie Crew the opportunity to train with you.

IF the gym gets much stronger??! You mean WHEN the gym gets much stronger. Don't worry by the time you guys make the trip again there will be a couple new bars and a couple hundred more pounds of plates.

I have to agree with you though....eat, talk, train, talk, eat, talk...worked pretty well.

Absolutely! I stand corrected. It's a certainty and time is the only variable in question.

100's are a wonderful thing... One can never have too much weight in one's gym. :D

I get the impression Screwball thinks we need more weight... ;)

It's not everyday that we have big strapping men come in here and outlift us. Heck, your traps and shoulders are the size of my head. Very nice, btw... :)

Thanks for the compliment, Spatts.

I was impressed by everyone's lifting and I can't wait to train with the Asylum Crew again. We'll have to hit our lower bodies next time. I think there may be a little less talking and a lot more "huffing & puffing" going on, at least for me anyway. :D

Sounds like you guys had a great time. I hope to make it up with you guys one day. How long did it take to drive up?

Bench and Crew--let me know if you're interested in training together on a regular basis. I'd like to step up my training a notch, and will need to change my lifting schedule if you guys are interested.

Later..

What's up VDOP? We missed you training this weekend but there will be other opportunities.

The trip to KC is 5 hrs. from Stillwater, 4 hrs. from Tulsa and 3 hrs. from Bentonville. I met BigOkie & Bmonster in Joplin, MO and we all traveled together up to KC.

Bmonster mentioned that he was going to get in touch with you so that we can set a training plan together. We will probably try to get together in the next 2-3 weeks.

Hey Screwball. I really wished I could have been there. We got my buddy married off so I have that out of the way.

Sounds like you guys had a pretty good workout at the asylum. They had the same impressions about you guys that I did--ya'll are some big mofos!--I was glad to see Bench being a short lil fellow too! I noticed Spatts comment on it, and Ive been meaning to ask-WTF dod you do for shoulders?

I hope to hear from bench pretty soon. Like I've said, Im needing to kick it up a notch. Maybe we can figure some way to rotate gyms each week or two. That way we can all get together and train regular, and maybe balance out the driving. But whatever is good with you guys works for me. let me know.

What are you guys doing the weekend of Aug 24th?

Keep in mind, if you have kids, that school will be starting.

Let's pick a location and set it up.

I, too, had a great time. The training was good and the food was great.

Really jealous of Hannibal's rev hyper. I'm gonna make one for my gym in the next couple of months. I think it's something that EVERY gym should have.

It was a good workout even though I was tired and hadn't slept in two days

If you need any measurements off of it when you go to build your own let me know. And enjoy the Seminar Videos when you get a chance.

If I work out with you a couple more times you will have me back to my old ways.....lifting in jean shorts and barefeet...thats the way to do it.

Check your elite mail btw....sent you the info about those Canvas Suits....better than Frantz.

Hey guys. Hopefully If you train the weekend of the 24th, you can push it back to Sunday. Found out last week I have inventory at work on the 23-24.

hey BigOkie-long time no hear from!

Hannibal-Let me know if you find something to bring up the tris. I have the same glaring weakness! Im going to try more partial overload movements(board press, lockouts, band presses) as the group suggested to see if that works. Are you much of a fan of floor presses? I think BigOkie was the only one in the group other than me that thought much of them.

Later..

We should definately put something together in the near future. Saturdays will not work for me until after the Fall, at least. My son plays football on Saturdays, so with that caveat, I am pretty much up for whenever, and wherever.

VDOP, I found what I think is a dynamite tricep lockout strengthener, showed it to the KC crew this weekend. Kind of have to show it, hard to explain it.

B.

Hey Benchmonster, do you think you can get us some pics of this "dynamite tricep lockout strengthener" that you mentioned? I could use some new and improved tris myself..Or if nothing else maybe you could at least try to give a description of the movement.. I know we would all appreciate it

I have no pictures, but I will do the best I can to explain it.

Set the rack up like you are going to do rack lockouts, but move the pins one notch lower than normal. For my rack this means another 3 inches of movement. Take a close grip, I use a thumb away from the smooth, but grip wherever is close for you.

I prefer to use an enormous amount of band tension for these. I use doubled green bands. Not choked and double looped, but doubled the same way you would do with the minibands. I prefer to put on a shirt and take a close grip for these. The shirt protects the pecs and shoulders while trying to break free from the pins.

I have worked up to 225 bar weight plus the band tension, but the band tension is far more than the bar weight. I prefer to do this one after speed bench, but did it sunday in the Asylum with doubled pink bands, and just used more bar weight.

The reason I like this one so much, is that the doubled greens really jump on you in a hurry, and require an incredible amount of effort to get locked out, even with just the bar, as the weight goes up, so does the difficulty.

Not everyone can use the doubled greens right off, of course, the band tension needs to be adjusted for your particular strength level, but anyone on the board could do at least a doubled miniband, and work up from there.

I recommend the shirt to help get off the pins without seperating your sternum from your pectoral muscles. I have done these without a shirt and felt like my pec was going to go shooting across the room on the first set. Threw on the shirt for a lark, and was able to bang out 5 reps without any pec pain.

This is my magic lockout builder. George Halbert does something similar with a ton of band tension and a 4 or 5 board press. These are similar, but start out with no eccentric movement. I think this teaches you to explode, and the heavy bands teaches you to push hard and fast throughout the movement.

But wear a shirt!!! I don't want to read about somebody blowing their pec or shoulder all to Hell becuase of my magic exercise. Hope this helps, and have fun.

B.

so a close grip lockout, one pin under your normal, w/ a lot of band tension??
i've done thse once... i almost cried like a bitch.
and i only did choked down mini's with 155

All I need is a time and a destination and I'm there. August 24th - 25th works for me. Let's plan this thing early so everyone can attend.

Well if Benchmonster can't do Saturdays...we could do Sunday. Since that is the day that the KC crew normally does DE bench. We could just rotate and do ME Bench. Or if we decided to do ME lower body...we could adjust the training acordingly.

You are always welcome at The Asylum...

And Benchmonster...you never said anything about one thumb length from the smooth...on the magic lockout move. I was index on the smooth....no wonder it was hard as hell.

Hey Bench-you mentioned this one when I was up at your place. Me and my wife already tried it the week after you told me about it. Me and the kid I train with did it tonite without the bands. I agree about the shirt idea though>I'm sitting here with an icepack on my shoulder/trap area as we speak.

Also- I think we were moving it roughly 6-8 inches. Sound about right? Would you mind posting your workouts in a thread. Even if you dont put weights, just put Board press, Jm's, rolling Dbs, pulldown, blah blah....... That way I can gauge how I set mine up, and Im sure everybody else would like to see your w/o too.

If you happen to catch someone with an old bench shirt in roughly our size>well, my size(Does Inzer make childrens shirts?), let me know. I need to buy a looser one to train in, as I dont want to be showing off my mono ab and man boobs to all the little disco boys at the gym while i squeeze in and out of my little poly.

Hey guys WAY TO GO on the PR. I can't wait until i start college and I see how much free time I'm gonna have. I'ma try and make trips up to lift with JAY and then go down south and lift with VTEC and the south Fl crew. Then I have bob i'd like to lift with also.

WOW i have people surrounded ALL around me.

VDOP,

I don't know if anyone would be interested or not, but I will try and put up a thread about how I have been training and give specifics.

I am working on an article I will submit to Powermag, doubt it will get published cause outside of Elite, nobody knows who I am, YET. But I will put it up and see if they take it. If they don't maybe I can put it on here or Irish's site for everyone here to read, at least.

But I will try and get my training journal together this week and post a thread about it.

What size is your chest? Let me know that, and I will see if I can wrangle you a shirt. You also might consider getting a Titan shirt. They don't squeeze you like the poly's, I am told, and I even hear you can get into one by yourself. Also it is 85 bucks, and somebody could not get 600 to touch with one that was too tight, and the shirt did not blow out.

Something to think about.

B.

bench- if you want more reviews about the titan shirt, check out the thread about it.. i think i posted 3 reviews from some pretty big lifters in USAPL

When are you gonna raid my house of pain?

B True

I doubt very seriously if I could hang with you B-fold, but if I am ever in that area I would love to have you put a whoopin on me.

I need to learn how to fly a plane in order to get there and back in a reasonable amount of time, tho.

I appreciate the invite. Maybe Screwball and bigokie could flip your tire, or carry your housefelt stone, doubt I could budge any of it. I am not strong in real life, just an internet hero. People that can pick up tires, and do farmers walk are real world strong.

I have always had very good gym strength and only fair to above average real world strength. Maybe I need to do strongman events for my GPP?

Deciever, yeah, I read that. If it is half what those guys say it is, then it will be a nice shirt. I may get one myself, tho I will not be lifting USAPL, even if my shirt is within the rules.

B.

bench- so far i've only heard one not so great thing about the shirt. And that was if your not used to the shirt and dont pull it down really far (to compensate for the arch), and you try and arch alot, it can slide up a bit, and make your lift a bit weird....

I agree Deciever,

a belt should help hold it down. Open back denim will do the same thing if you don't do something to anchor it down.

B.

Ahhh...Night Fly flipped her 600-650 tire with easy yesterday. You could do it...and have lots of fun.
