the last year or so, i can barely eat anything. it's like my stomach is shrinking. I have a huge sweet tooth, but other than that, i'll take a few bites of real food and not want anymore.

the only thing that seems to help it is a good workout... so i workout, then i'm starving and eat a huge meal.

this is not good.

Is it a physical ailment or stress?.... maybe both.

I have severe GI issues which limit me to only being able to eat very small quantities of food at one sitting often times we are talking a couple of mouthfulls. I suppose the upshot here (if you can say there is one) is that even small quantities of sweets make me feel nauseous. And NOTHING increases my appetite. Every now and again I will get hungry for something, eat a *normal* quantity of food and regret the day I was born. LOL

You have to try to eat - period, whether you are hungry or not. I can't tell you how many meals (mouthfulls) I force. But after a couple of days (I try to remember to eat a tbsp of peanut butter every morning) my metabolism revs and I am hungry enough to WANT to eat every several hours.

My husband wants to kill me for all the *orphan* spoons he finds literally laying all over the place. LOL

ah. you said something- i have GERD. i deal with heartburn every day- maybe that's part of the problem.

If a good workout is what motivates you to eat, how about breaking apart the session so you have less intense wo's thereby not needing to refuel with the larger meal?

As BM said, you have to force yourself to eat. You seem like a really detailed person, I bet if you made yourself a very specific schedule for eating, you'd hit every entry.

well if i go out to eat, i've learned that I can really only eat an appetizer, or get a main course and bring half of it home. rarely do i eat the whole thing, but once in a while I can.

at home, when i cook i'll be all excited to have whatever I made, then i pick at it and don't want it anymore. Last night I had a small bowl of pasta with a homeade sauce with big chunks of tomato and garlic. I was so full I couldn't get up from the table and I ate less than my 11 year old.

The last few MD mags dealt with appetite stimulators, both pharma and natural ones.

I must admit, I only skimmed the articles, and I have since dropped the mags in my gym.

I will see if I can find them again and take a closer look.

What does GERD stand for - gastro-esophageal reflux disorder or something like that?

I can understand if eating is painful, you will not want to eat.

What has your GP said about your condition, has he prescribed anything?

I am a firm believer in any symptoms/disorders can be minimised or cured with diet and a few supps or herbal/homeopathic remedies.

yes, i think that's what gerd stands for. basically, i get heartburn every day and it hurts.
but, it's not like there is pain when i eat, i just can barely eat much at once, and often lose my appetite very quickly.
except for sweet things, unfortunately.

You remind me of some old cat, they lose their appetites and it's hell to get 'em back to eatin. :)

All kidding aside...

Have you tried just eating tiny meals throughout the day?Whole grains and protein packed? I 'd steer clear of those 'mater based sauces if I were you. God, this would kill me too, cuz I love 'maters and spices!

I'd try this before I got that lil purple pill. I hate meds of any kind, unless it's the last resort!

:)

G, I had my endoscopy done 3 weeks ago. I also have GERD. Mine is caused from my illness. I've had it for yrs and like you, eat like a bird at every sitting. It's really not a bad way to eat in any case.
You can try peppermint teas and eating when you're relaxed. I get an appetite maybe once a month (It freaks Marc out), and usually eat just cause I have to.
But when I work out and yes relaxed, I can eat more.
I wish I had some more magically answers, but I'm in the same boat.
Did u ever have an endoscopy?
