I'm just starting to lift. 5'10" 178 16%bf. I want to lean out and gain muscle. I'm following a low carb diet and following most of the training principles set on this board. I'm restricting my calories by 600 a day.

Question: Since I'm just begining will I be able to gain muscle while on this calorie restriction.

I know that you need excess calories to gain muscle but don't know if this pertains to a new lifter since they can make rapid gains for the first couple months.

Thanks

Are you only eating 600 calories per day?? 600 calories is not enough for anyone over 30 lbs IMO. You still need to maintain the muscle mass you have, even if you want to lose fat.

Man, that is not nearly enough calories. I would think at your weight you should get atleast 2100 cals spread out in atleast 6 meals a day. At that calorie level you will lose more muscle than fat. Start out there and see how you feel. IMO if you are losing more than 2 pounds a week you need to eat more.

yeah 600 calories is ridiculously low and you will not grow, heck you dont have enough calories in you to support your organs and and just the muscles you use to live!
that's severe restriction and long term you will stall your metabolism and mess it up beig time.

you need to be sensible

you say you're starting out so dont make drastic changes straight away, take baby steps, the progress will be slower but believe me it will be better for your body in the long run

i think hes sayin that he eating 600 calories less than what he normally eats. ie he used to eat 2600 a day now he eats 2000 a day.

Thanks for replying....... I should have gave more details. My maintance calories is about 2500 and I restrcting them by 600cal down to 1900. Since I'm a beginner (1 week lifting) can I still put on muscle while resrticting calories.

Im going from a bad 2500cals to a good clean 1900cals.

If you guys think I cannot gain any muscle on 1900 them I will concentrate more on getting lean then I will bulk later.

But if you guys think I can gain muscle on 1900 then I will concentrate on both getting lean and gaining muscle.

It is hard to focus on both gaining muscle and losing fat at the same time. I think it maybe more realistic to focus on maintaining muscle while losing fat, then focus on gaining muscle. But, who knows, you might be able to do it.

if u wanna lose weight and keep muscle mass even gain then i think you'll have to go for the slow burn in fat and reduce your calories only slightly, say by 250 cals a day and just do more HIIT
