Need help on finding state law info for hit and run arrest!

Sorry for the AAS unrelated question but I need help. Last night on the way home from the bar I hit a street sign in my housing addition. Well since I had been drinking I left and figured I would take it up with the land lord Monday and pay him for it. Nevertheless, I had a couple cops show up and give me summons to show up in court Feb. 24th. I thought that the damage had to be over $500 inorder for it to be considered a hit and run. The street sign is hand made and is probably not worth $500. How or where can I get a detailed state law for this? I know drinking and driving is stupid but the damage is already done and they don't know about the drinking. Please help!

what you have just described is a misdemeanor in my state. easiest thing to do is go see a lawyer. you also might try calling the prosecutor's office to find out how serious the charge is. but if you have a law school nearby go to the law library and ask a librarian. tell them what you need and they should be able to take you to the exact statute book.

I can only speak about my place but here, a hit and run must imply a person. Either he/she's hit directly or is in the car at the moment of the acident, but just hitting a post sign is not a criminal hit and run. Just a misdemeanor.
