I have serious pains in my rt knee, and today could not do squats worth beans. Usually, I do squats, leg press, lunges, and calves on leg days once a week, totalling 12 sets on upper legs of heavy weights. Any less stressfull leggy things I could do that would involve the joints/muscles of my 'usual' day?

When you squat, leg press, and do lunges...do your knees go out over your toes? Your shins should be straight up and down...

would box squats, on a bench, be better? I'm 5'10" so would a bench be too high?

Sure would...it does wonders for me. Look at my video clip on this page of my Box Squat Pr!! It ain't perfect...but you can get the idea...

Serious pain? If it's serious pain, then get it checked out. I was wondering about your knee position as well. If you're knee is going over your toe, you could be putting unwanted stress on the joint. What kind of lunges are you doing? Walking or front lunge? Have you tried Smith Machine Lunges, sometimes referred to as squat lunges?

I do stationary front lunges, 70lb dblls x 8 x3 or so reps. One leg out in front, toes just out a bit. I try to make sure my knees are over my toes, and down i go... then up again.

I think I'm going to try box squats, I think I need to check out the gym's bench heights, otherwise I'll rig up an aerobics step. I checked out bfold's video, and the concept of building up like that without the havok to joints seems more sane than going deep with squats.

I am leary of doing smith lunges as I'm not clear on the proper form. box squats seem more 'natural' and unrestricted... more stabilizers needed, that is.

Plus having a cushie on the tushie is mildly reassuring ... sort of like a spotter...

Stationary front lunges are pretty much the same as Smith Lunges except that you're on a glide for safety. I love them, they hit my thighs, my hams, and my butt all at the same time!
That's some pretty good weight that you're using for your lunges.
Do you do your lunges first or last in your leg program?

Thanks for your replies. I normally do lunges last after squats and leg press. Tomorrow's leg day:D I am leery about proper positioning on the smith machine, that's why I avoid it.
