STORRS, Connecticut (Ticker) -- In its quest to solidify first
place in the Big East Conference, Villanova hopes history can
repeat itself.
The second-ranked Wildcats look to extend their winning streak
to 12 games and complete a regular-season sweep of No. 4
Connecticut when the teams meet on Sunday.
Villanova (22-2, 12-1 Big East) has not lost in conference play
since January 8 against West Virginia and owns a one-game lead
over the Huskies in the Big East with three games left.
In their earlier meeting, Allan Ray scored 19 of his 25 points
in the second half as the Wildcats rallied from a 12-point
deficit and posted a 69-64 victory over Connecticut on February
13.
Kyle Lowry scored 18 points and Will Sheridan added 13 with 10
rebounds for Villanova, which beat the Huskies for just the
second time in their last nine meetings.
Randy Foye scored 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and freshman
Dante Cunningham hit a layup with three seconds remaining as
the Wildcats matched the best 24-game start in school history
with a 74-72 victory over Cincinnati on Thursday.
Connecticut (24-2, 11-2) has won 12 of 13, losing only to
Villanova during that stretch. After Sunday, the Huskies close
the regular season against South Florida and Louisville.
Marcus Williams recorded the sixth triple-double in Connecticut
history with 18 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds, and the
Huskies set a Big East record with 19 blocked shots in a frantic
75-74 overtime triumph against Notre Dame on Tuesday.
Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun can tie Norm Stewart for 15th
place on the Division I list with 728 victories and move within
one of Jerry Tarkanian for 14th.
