*Illinois aims to maintain dominance of Michigan State*
-------------------------------------------------------
Michigan St (21-10) at No. 9 Illinois (25-5) 9:10 pm EST
INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Two of the Big Ten's preseason
favorites meet earlier than expected when No. 9 Illinois faces
Michigan State in the quarterfinals of the league tourney on
Friday.
Both teams were the popular choice to claim the Big Ten regular
season title with a host of observers tabbing the Spartans
(21-10) as the team to beat.
However, the Fighting Illini (25-5) were the better of the two
and won both meetings to extend their winning streak in the
series to five games.
Dee Brown scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half when the
teams met Saturday in East Lansing, leading Illinois to a 75-68
victory and knocking Michigan State from the national rankings.
The Spartans lost five of seven games down the stretch to fall
in the first round of the event for the first time since its
inception in 1998. They did their best to take away the sting
of that slide with a 70-58 win over Purdue on Thursday.
Maurice Ager scored 20 points and freshman Goran Suton had a
career-high 12 in just 17 minutes for Michigan State, which got
forward Matt Trannon back from a layoff after a broken jaw.
The winner will face either Iowa or Minnesota in Saturday's
semifinals.
