NCAA: March Madness

The Gators are the fav to repeat as tourney champ

Florida, Kansas, North Carolina, and Ohio State are the four top seeds in this year's NCAA Tournament, while a late-season slump made UCLA a No. 2. The entire March Madness field was announced by the tourney selection committee on Sunday afternoon, with the Gators well-placed for another championship run.

And Vegas oddsmakers like Florida's chances of winning a second consecutive NCAA hoops title. The most recent odds had the Gators listed as 5/2 favorites to be the last team standing. North Carolina and Ohio State are tied for second on the list at 7/2 odds, while Kansas is pegged at 6/1 odds. The Bruins are listed at 7/1 odds right now, below the top contenders but well above their opening 18/1.

But UCLA will need to bounce back from a 76-69 loss to the California Golden Bears in the quarterfinal round of the Pac-10 Tournament. The Bruins had been favored to take that tournament title, but still fell in overtime to the Golden Bears.

The four top seeds, in contrast, all won their respective conference tournaments on Sunday afternoon. Florida blew past Arkansas 77-56 in the SEC title game. Kansas needed overtime, but they managed to top Texas 88-84 in the Big 12 championship game. North Carolina beat North Carolina State 89-80 in the final round of the ACC Tournament. And Ohio State got 12 points and 10 boards from Greg Oden en route to defeating Wisconsin 66-49 for the Big Ten championship.

The No. 1 teams will now prepare to knock out their overmatched opponents in the first round of the tournament - no No. 16 seed has ever beaten a No. 1 seed (they have an 0-88 record in the tourney). Florida will take on Jackson State in New Orleans, while North Carolina plays Eastern Kentucky in Winston-Salem, Ohio State battles Central Connecticut State in Lexington, and Kansas meets the winner of Tuesday night's Play-In Game (Florida A&M vs. Niagara) in Chicago.

UCLA, meanwhile, will play No. 15 Weber State in Sacramento. This year's other No. 2 teams are Wisconsin (versus Texas A&M Corpus Christi in Chicago), Georgetown (versus Belmont in Winston-Salem), and Memphis (versus North Texas in New Orleans). No. 2 seeds have been almost as successful as the top seeds in years past - they've won 84 of their 88 first-round contests since 1985.

And Vegas oddsmakers have been giving each of those No. 2 seeds some solid odds to win the tournament this season. UCLA, of course, is listed at 7/1, while Wisconsin is just above them at 5/1 odds. Georgetown was pegged at 8/1 odds on the most recent list, with Memphis at 12/1 odds. The only other team given single-digit championship odds heading into the weekend was Texas A&M, who were listed at 8/1. The Aggies, No. 3 in the South, will play Penn in the first round.

Could the Quakers pull off an upset over Texas A&M? The No. 3 seed has lost to the No. 14 seed 15 times in tournament history, but nevertheless the Aggies (like all of the other top seeds) will be large favorites to advance to the second round.

The 2007 NCAA Tournament officially gets underway on Tuesday night with the Play-In Game, but the action really gets started with the first slate of 16 games on Thursday afternoon and night. Teams in action on Thursday include Ohio State, Texas A&M, Pittsburgh, Duke, UCLA, Georgetown, North Carolina, and Washington State. Memphis, Kansas,
