*Florida opens SEC Tournament title defense against Arkansas*
-------------------------------------------------------------
Arkansas (22-8) at No. 14 Florida (24-6) 9:45 pm EST
NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Seemingly past a late-season
slump, No. 14 Florida begins its Southeastern Conference
tournament title defense Friday by taking on Arkansas in a
quarterfinal matchup.
The Gators (24-6) lost three straight games down the stretch to
lose any chance at an SEC East Division title, but rebounded to
win their last two, including an impressive 79-64 victory at
Kentucky last Sunday.
After failing to reach the finals of the event nine straight
times, Florida broke through in 2004 before bowing out to the
Wildcats. It returned the favor last season with a 70-53
victory in the championship game.
The Razorbacks (22-8) dealt the Gators the first of their three
straight losses last month, posting an 85-81 win at home.
That triumph started Arkansas's six-game winning streak that may
have assured the club an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament.
The run was kept alive with an 80-67 victory over Georgia in
the first round on Thursday.
Jonathon Modica scored 20 points and SEC leading scorer Ronnie
Brewer chipped in 18 as the Razorbacks earned their first win in
the event since 2001.
The winner will face either Louisiana State or Vanderbilt in
Saturday's semifinals.
