SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Closing in on a franchise milestone, the Dallas Mavericks need to fend off a surging opponent.
The Mavericks can record their 50th victory for the sixth consecutive season Sunday when they visit the improving Sacramento Kings.
Dallas has won four of its last five and holds a one-game lead over San Antonio for the top spot in both the Southwest Division and the Western Conference. The Mavericks trail Detroit by one-half game for the league's best record and homecourt advantage in the NBA Finals.
Dirk Nowitzki scored 34 points and Jerry Stackhouse added 16 for Dallas, which won for the 23rd time in 26 games with Saturday's 90-87 victory over the Utah Jazz.
After dropping eight games below .500 on February 3, Sacramento has rallied to even its record for the first time since November 29 and is one-half game behind New Orleans for the final postseason berth in the West.
Ron Artest continues to have a positive impact on the Kings after being acquired from Indiana on January 25. He tied his season-high with 30 points to lead the Kings to their 11th straight home victory in Friday's 105-93 triumph over the Memphis Grizzlies.
